Dear Neighbor,
This past July marked one year since the Trump administration signed H.R. 1 or as I like to call it “The Big Ugly Bill,” into law, enacting the largest federal funding cuts to health care in U.S. history. The devastating impact of these cuts has been swift and relentless, and they were the driving force for Measure ER to be placed on the ballot - and, thankfully passed by voters this year.
The story behind the deeply harmful challenges H.R. 1 is creating for our health care system, and the realities residents are facing today—is captured in the powerful CalMatters mini-documentary, “The Cut: How California’s Medi-Cal Cuts Are Threatening Health Care.”
I encourage you to watch this documentary to better understand the journey that brought us here and learn more about the work that lies ahead.
The stories featured in the documentary remind us that behind the numbers are real people and communities whose lives are at stake—including our immigrant communities, residents with disabilities, low-income earning households, fellow residents experiencing homelessness, and countless others who will be deeply impacted.
It is never lost on me that LA County is the only county in California to ask voters to directly help us respond to H.R. 1’s devastating health care cuts. The residents who stand to be hurt the most by these cuts also stepped up in the greatest numbers to say yes to a temporary half-cent sales tax.
We have a responsibility to be accountable and transparent with these resources, and that is exactly what we will continue to do as we move through the implementation of Measure ER and continue fighting to protect access to lifesaving health care.
In service, Holly J. Mitchell Los Angeles County Supervisor, Second District

Good jobs should be within reach for every resident. I’m proud that LA County’s Department of Economic Opportunity is investing $5.74 million to expand High Road Training Partnerships (HRTP), bringing our total investment to $39.7 million since my motion in 2022 to help launch this initiative. HRTP’s connect residents, including those who have faced barriers to employment with training, support, and pathways to family-sustaining careers in growing industries like healthcare, construction, advanced manufacturing, hospitality, and the care economy.
So far, the County’s investments have supported more than 2,500 workers in training, 1,400+ graduates, and 630+ workers hired into related jobs. Our pets quickly become part of our families unconditional love to our homes. This month, the County’s LA County’s Department of Animal Care & Control is partnering with NBCUniversal and Telemundo 52 for the Clear the Shelters campaign. From now until August 31st, adoption fees, spay/neuter fees, and microchip fees will be waived.
Pet adoption is one of the best ways to help us get the animals in our shelters into a safe home, and we need your help in making that happen. Our Carson shelter has your next furry friend waiting for their forever home. Learn more at: https://animalcare.lacounty.gov/
