Dear Neighbor,
You may have seen today's Los Angeles Times story highlighting the financial challenges facing Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, which provides lifesaving care to residents across South Los Angeles, including our unincorporated Willowbrook community.
The article also underscores the critical role Measure B funding - which voters approved 25 years ago - plays in sustaining our countywide trauma and emergency care system.
The financial challenges many hospitals face today are far different from those that existed when Measure B was approved over two decades ago. From the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to recent federal funding cuts under H.R. 1 that have already caused more residents to lose health insurance, hospitals like MLK are caring for growing numbers of uninsured patients with fewer financial resources.
That is why I have introduced a motion, which will be considered at tomorrow's August 4 Board of Supervisors meeting, calling for an independent study of how ongoing Measure B funds are allocated. Every hospital in our trauma and emergency care system plays a vital role. This review is about ensuring taxpayer dollars are allocated in a way that reflects today's healthcare landscape and continues to fulfill Measure B's intended purpose of strengthening access to lifesaving trauma and emergency care.

As part of our 2nd District Community Budget where we asked residents in Florence-Firestone and Ladera Heights to tell us how to invest in their community. We were proud to host a Florence-Firestone Job Fair with the non-profit Inspire Together - this was one of the winning ideas residents wanted to see. More than 400 residents attended and over 100 people received job offers.

 The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District - a local government agency that helps protect communities from mosquitoes and other pests that can spread diseases - has confirmed the first mosquito sample of the year to test positive for West Nile virus in Florence-Firestone.
While most mosquito bites are mostly just a nuisance, some mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus, which can spread to people, horses, and birds through a bite. Although many people never develop symptoms, the virus can cause serious illness in some cases.
The good news is there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family:
- Empty standing water from buckets, flower pots, birdbaths, children's toys, plant saucers, tires, and other containers at least once a week.
- Keep swimming pools, spas, and ponds clean and well maintained. If you notice a neglected or green pool, report it to your local vector control district.
- Wear insect repellent when spending time outdoors, especially around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
- If you find a dead bird, report it to the California Department of Public Health at westnile.ca.gov or call 1-877-WNV-BIRD.
