Dear Neighbor,
This week marks the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, the day (June 19, 1865) when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people of African descent in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Remembrance, celebration, and community was on full display this past Saturday as we hosted our 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair at George Washington Carver Park in our unincorporated Willowbrook community.
Hundreds of residents from across the Second District joined us to celebrate and connect to services from more than 70 participating organizations, including County departments, community partners and small businesses. This event is a labor of love and wouldn’t be possible without the support of every person, participating organization and sponsor.

Recognizing Juneteenth with LA County As we prepare to recognize Juneteenth this Friday, I am proud to share that today, the Board of Supervisors approved my motion calling on County departments to help educate, engage, and encourage residents to participate in Juneteenth celebrations across Los Angeles County. Similar to last year, the motion also calls for free admission opportunities at cultural institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Natural History Museum, and the La Brea Tar Pits, inviting residents to learn more about our history and celebrate the rich diversity of our County.
I encourage you to explore Juneteenth events in your community, visit your local library, and take time to reflect on the lessons of this important day. To learn more, visit the LA County Library Juneteenth resource page: lacountylibrary.org/celebrate-juneteenth/
Freedom Summer Program Last year, we started building on our Juneteenth event to ensure its impact extended beyond one day and created our Freedom Summer Program - this initiative provides 8+ weeks of free programs for residents at the local park where our Juneteenth event took place. I am thrilled to say Freedom Summer is back and happening now at Carver Park. To learn more about the programs offered, visit: mitchell.lacounty.gov/freedom-summer/
We all know that the fight for freedom and equality did not end in 1865, which is why we must relentlessly ask, what does freedom mean today? and do all we can to make that vision a reality for each resident - this is how we can build a more just and inclusive future.
In service, Holly J. Mitchell Los Angeles County Supervisor, Second District
