Dear Neighbor,
Addressing homelessness through compassionate, coordinated action requires partnership at every level of government and a shared commitment to urgently serving our communities.This week, we demonstrated what that collaboration can achieve through a multi-jurisdictional encampment resolution effort led by the County’s Homeless Services and Housing Department alongside the City of Los Angeles, City of Inglewood, and Caltrans.
Together, we were able to move 29 people living in encampments along the 405 freeway spanning from Inglewood to Westchester indoors and on the path to permanent housing.
For weeks leading up to this encampment resolution, St. Joseph Center conducted outreach to our unhoused friends, family, and neighbors, to build the trust necessary for people to accept support and begin their journey toward housing stability.
Community service providers including People Assisting The Homeless (PATH) and the Homeless Outreach Program Integrated Care System (HOPICS) will continue working with residents at interim housing sites, supporting their transition toward permanent housing, healing, and hope.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month our office is proud to recognize the Koreatown Youth + Community Center (KYCC). For over 50 years, KYCC has provided critical and inclusive services for families, youth and small businesses throughout our district and LA County. This past year KYCC served over 23,700 children and families, planted 850 trees and distributed thousands of dollars in stipends for youth internships. Vote! Election Day is Tuesday, June 2. Use the power of your voice and vote in the upcoming primary election. To find the nearest voting center near you or an official drop box to submit your ballot, please visit, plan.lavote.gov.
Starting June 1, some CalFresh recipients may see changes to their eligibility requirements. During the application or renewal process, certain participants will be asked to meet work-related requirements, including work registration and, for some adults, additional rules known as Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) requirements. Many people are exempt from these rules, but those who are not may need to work, participate in job training, or fulfill other program requirements to continue receiving benefits. LA County’s Department of Public Social Services has created this resourceful webpage to help CalFresh recipients navigate these changes as a result of the federal H.R.1 law.

We’re calling all the cities within our district (Carson, Compton, Culver City, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach) and throughout LA County - to join our office in taking the Shared Prosperity Pledge to help end poverty. May is Older Americans Month, and the County’s Aging & Disabilities Department is encouraging older adults, families, and communities to start conversations about what it means to age well and take practical steps to support health and well-being.
