Did you know some diseases we once had under control are coming back. Doctors are seeing more cases of measles, mumps, and whooping cough, and there are signs that polio may still be around.
Staying protected from preventable diseases is one important benefit of a Well Child Visit. This is the second of six helpful messages that explain the different ways these visits support better health.
During a Well Child Visit, we check for the right vaccines for every stage that protect against the following diseases:
Ages 3–13
DTaP
Diphtheria: thick coating in the throat that can block airways.
Tetanus: painful muscle tightening and trouble swallowing.
Pertussis or whooping cough: violent coughing fits that make it hard to breathe.
MMR
Measles: fever, rash, and complications that can harm the lungs or brain.
Mumps: swollen cheeks and jaw, possible hearing problems.
Rubella: mild fever, pink rash, and swollen glands.
Varicella (Chickenpox): Itchy rash with blisters that can lead to skin infections or pneumonia.
Polio: Sudden muscle weakness or paralysis that can become permanent.
