Dear Neighbor,
Coming off the heels of National Nurses Week (May 6–12), I want to express my deep gratitude to our nurses, healthcare workers, and public health professionals who demonstrate every day that public health is public safety.
From ensuring health facilities meet safety standards and responding to emergencies, to preventing the spread of infectious diseases, supporting substance use recovery and prevention, and creating safer community spaces, public health touches every aspect of our lives.
The Department of Public Health has created a Public Health is Public Safey site publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/publichealth-is-publicsafety/ that highlights the critical work being done every day to protect the health and wellbeing of our communities while connecting residents to important public health information, community resources, and support services.
It also offers a closer look at the many dedicated people and teams working behind the scenes to keep our healthcare system running. I encourage you to visit the site to learn more about the essential role public health plays in keeping our communities safe and connected to care.
In the face of the largest cuts in federal funding to our healthcare system in U.S. history, we are clear what’s at stake and are committed to doing all we can to protect healthcare access and the County’s safety net services.
Together, let’s stay informed, connected and take action.
In service, Holly J. Mitchell Los Angeles County Supervisor, Second District
Last year the Board of Supervisors joined me in proclaiming the third Saturday of May as Black Elders Appreciation Day in LA County. Today, our office was proud to partner with Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance and California Black Women's Health Project in celebrating the 2nd Annual LA County Black Elders Appreciation Day. Let us reaffirm our appreciation, respect, and love for our elders for being the pillars of our families and communities and commit to ensuring their golden years are met with the dignity and joy they deserve.
Congratulations to this year’s honorees D’Ann Morris, Debra Ward, Mark E. Moore, Sandi Hamilton, and former Team Mitchell member April Johnson!

Today we celebrated the groundbreaking of the future permanent home for allcove Beach Cities in Redondo Beach — a major investment in youth mental health and wellness. This new 9,400-square-foot facility will open in 2027.
Earlier this year, I partnered with Supervisor Janice Hahn to secure a unanimous Board approval for a $4.5 million investment to sustain allcove Beach Cities and explore expanding similar models countywide.
Young people helped shape this model for care without stigma and support before challenges become crises and their voices continue to lead the way.
All month long the County Department of Mental Health is hosting free community events. Join us at Compton College (1111 E. Artesia Blvd. Compton CA 90221) on Wednesday, May 20 from 11:00 am to 2:00pm for a wellness and resource event packed with free giveaways, music, and food.
