It’s Saturday March 28, here’s what is in your 2nd District Unincorporated Communities Newsletter: New Affordable Housing in South LA, Maggie Hathaway Golf Course Re-Opens, Survey to Help Inform the Future of Oil Well Sites, Support for Florence-Firestone Residents to Stay Housed, Job Opportunities, and more resources.
Dear Neighbor,
As we close out World Doula Week (March 22–28), I want to uplift L.A. County’s Medi-Cal Doula Hub. I put forward the motion to create this necessary program in response to doula services becoming available for people on Medi-Cal and to improve maternal health outcomes in our communities.
In partnership with a broad coalition that includes LA County Department of Public Health, Frontline Doulas, Diversity Uplifts Inc., healthcare plans, and community partners we launched the LA County Medi-Cal Doula Hub to help expand access to doula care and grow the doula workforce.
Every person deserves a healthy perinatal experience, and doulas help make that possible by providing personalized, culturally competent, and often lifesaving care. Doulas bring comfort and support to birthing people and their families during some of the most critical moments of their lives.
I am proud that L.A. County’s Medi-Cal Doula Hub serves all residents who need this proven level of care and support.
Since launching in 2025, the L.A. County Medi-Cal Doula Hub has trained and welcomed more than 30 new doulas across English- and Spanish-speaking cohorts. And has partnered with the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) to train more than 300 providers on the role and benefits of doulas, as well as strategies to integrate them into hospital settings.
Our work together is just getting started. To learn more about how the County is supporting birthing people and doulas, visit: www.frontlinedoulas.com/doula-hub

The newly improved Maggie Hathaway Golf Course has officially reopened! ⛳️✨
This course stands as a powerful tribute to its namesake—a trailblazer who made golf more inclusive and a fierce advocate for racial justice. To say I’m thrilled to see this moment is an understatement.
After nearly three years and a $7.8 million investment from Los Angeles County—paired with generous philanthropic support—we’ve not only restored the beauty of this space, but have strengthened our commitment to ensuring communities that don’t often see themselves represented in golf feel welcomed and included.
I’m excited for the children, families, and residents of South Los Angeles and surrounding communities to enjoy this public golf course—beautifully designed by renowned architect Gil Hanse—for generations to come.
And this is just the beginning. Ongoing programs with community partners and a new community center opening this fall will continue to expand access and opportunity.
Thank you to the County Parks Department and all the partners that made this possible. 📍1921 W 98th St, Los Angeles, CA 90047

This week we officially opened Dean’s Place, a 56-unit affordable housing development in our unincorporated West Athens community that was made possible with $7.8M investment from the County’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund and No Place Like Home program.
This project represents a major investment in our community, with the County Department of Mental Health supporting and helping to serve residents.
Dean’s Place is named in memory of Dean Matsubayashi, the late Executive Director of Little Tokyo Service Center, who dedicated his life to expanding access to affordable housing and supportive services. His legacy lives on and serves as a bridge connecting Little Tokyo to South Los Angeles.
Thank you to the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, Little Tokyo Service Center, DMH and LA County Development Authoring for helping to make this vision a reality.
We remain committed to the long road ahead to phase out oil wells and permanently seal them. A few years ago, the Board passed my motion to put an end to oil drilling in our unincorporated communities which has been an ongoing fight that we are not backing down from. As we continue this work, we are taking the next step in the long-term process of planning for the future of these sites. We want to hear from residents in our unincorporated communities that live near oil well sites. Please complete the LA County Department of Regional Planning’s survey here.
Want more info? The LA County Department of Regional Planning is hosting a virtual community workshop on Tuesday, April 21 from 6:00- 7:00 pm, register here.
We partnered with the County’s Department of Economic Development (DEO) and America’s Job Centers of California (AJCC) to train people for jobs that provide family sustaining wages and advancement opportunities through our High Road Training Partnerships (HRTP) program. The next workshop is on Thursday, April 2 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. No registration is required. Join us at the Florence Library every first Thursday of every month! Train to be a home health aide, certified nurse assistant or for opportunities in the hospitality industry.
