Dear Neighbor,
I would like to share an update on the Harbor-UCLA Replacement Program, which is expanding the medical campus to meet the growing healthcare needs of West Carson and surrounding communities. Harbor UCLA is the only Level 1 Trauma Center serving the South Bay and South Central Los Angeles communities, handling over 4,500 trauma patients annually. The replacement program will update the existing hospital, built in the 1960s, with industry-leading facilities on the 72-acre medical campus by 2028.
Last year, I joined LA County Public Works, Department of Health Services, Harbor-UCLA Hospital, and the construction team in celebration of the Steel Topping Out of the new hospital building. Since then, thanks to the leadership and dedication of a diverse team, including a workforce that is 50% women and local hires, this project continues to move forward. Watch the video here to learn more about the people behind this initiative.
Update on Motion for Temporary ½ Cent Sales Tax Ballot Measure
The Trump administration's H.R. 1 (also known as the Big Beautiful Bill) created the largest federal funding cuts to our healthcare system in U.S. history. LA County will lose over $2.4 billion in funding needed to help serve our residents.
This week, the Board approved my motion with Chair Solis to ask voters to decide on a temporary ½ cent sales tax – that’s about 50 cents for every $100 – on non-essential items (meaning groceries, medicine, and items purchased with SNAP and WIC would not be taxed).
The Essential Services Restoration Act will be on the June 2 ballot, giving voters the opportunity to decide how we meet this moment and protect our healthcare system and safety-net services, which support millions of residents across all 88 cities and over 100 unincorporated communities in LA County.
Thank you to the diverse coalition of city leaders, healthcare advocates, union members, and residents who joined us to share about the devastating impacts of federal funding cuts on critical services, including healthcare for millions of LA County residents.
In service, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District
