Dear Neighbor,
We’ve been tracking the Trump administration’s latest attempts to freeze federal funding that supports critical safety net programs that millions of residents rely on. A federal judge’s temporary restraining order has put a hold on any potential freeze (until Feb 6) and the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) has shared that February CalWORKs benefits will be issued on time.
My office receives more than 1,500 calls each month related to accessing public benefits from hardworking families. Thank you to the community organizations that shared feedback to help inform the County’s assessment of impacts and available resources as part of the motion we passed for the County to use all legal action and strategies available to fight back. We will continue to share updates on how we’re working to protect access for the more than 200,000 children and 112,000 families in Los Angeles County who depend on CalWORKs.
Also, I want to call-out the abuse of power and attack on freedom of speech by the Trump administration and Attorney General Pam Bondi with the arrests of journalists who were lawfully documenting the atrocities unfolding in Minneapolis. These attacks are rooted in white supremacy and a long-history of silencing Black voices. We stand with our Black journalists and all reporters that are working to ensure the truth is told.
An Official World Cup Fan Zone Is Coming to South LA
I’m proud to share that we recently announced that my office, in partnership with the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee, is bringing an official Los Angeles World Cup Fan Zone to South LA. We will host a free fan zone for the July 4 and July 5 matches at LA County’s Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park in our unincorporated Willowbrook community. This is about making the magic of the World Cup accessible to all residents. For more information, click here.
100 Years of Black History Month
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month. Throughout February, we will uplift our shared history, highlight local trailblazers whose leadership and cultural impact have left their mark on Los Angeles County and across the globe, and share community events throughout our district—including our upcoming 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange on February 28 (save the date).
In service, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

Last year, the Metro Board supported my motion to further improve our transit system by identifying ways to make it more accessible for people with autism and other developmental disabilites. As part of this effort, Metro is partnering with The Wiley Center and Special Needs Network to get feedback from residents with lived experience (whether you use public transit or not). Please complete the survey here - it is open to anyone looking to share feedback to help make a world-class transportation system that truly serves everyone. The survey may take about 10 - 20 minutes to complete: https://evitarus.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aavZEFzp0OkLD82
