Dear Neighbor,
The fatal shootings of unarmed civilians by ICE agents - which is an absolute disgrace - and attempts to freeze billions in funding for programs that our most vulnerable residents rely on to stay housed, access childcare, and to survive, all stems from the Trump administration’s racist and inhumane playbook that cost lives and livelihoods.
As of now a federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from freezing funding for social service programs to California, New York, Minnesota, Illinois and Colorado. And the State of California has taken action by filing a lawsuit alongside the other states targeted by these baseless claims of fraud that are being used to play politics with people’s lives.
These interventions are temporarily holding off the freeze of federal funding for critical social services. However, we know there is still uncertainty and confusion. It’s imperative for the County - which administers social service programs that will be impacted - to have a well-coordinated plan of action for working alongside our state and local municipalities, community partners, and all stakeholders in protecting access to the resources our residents need.
That is why I have put forward a motion with Chair Hilda Solis that will be voted on at the next Tuesday, January 13 Board of Supervisors meeting, that will include the following actions:
- Assess how the potential freeze in funding will affect Los Angeles County families and children
- Direct the County’s legislative team to use all the tools available to fight for restoration of funding
- Evaluate legal challenges and alliances with other states and local municipalities
- Create a public information strategy so families and residents know the facts and the support available
We can and must continue to stand united against these attacks on working families and our most vulnerable residents. Over 270,000 residents in Los Angeles County alone rely on CalWORKs for cash aid to pay for rent, food, diapers and other life essentials. Out of that number, a staggering 200,000 children are served by this program.
There will be more information and updates in the days ahead. We will continue to do everything possible to not just respond to the immediacy of this manufactured crisis but also move us closer towards the kind of world we seek to create - one where dignity, safety, and prosperity is a reality for all our residents.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District
