Dear Neighbor,
Over 1.5 million Los Angeles County residents who rely on CalFresh to help pay for groceries will experience delays receiving their November benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
My district has the highest concentration of recipients in LA County with more than 390,000 children and adults that rely on this vital program for food.
Below is important information for CalFresh recipients to help protect their benefits and access food resources:
Important Reminders
- The State will be sending out notifications to CalFresh recipients. Please note that these notices do not mean your case has been terminated or that you are no longer eligible for CalFresh benefits.
- CalFresh recipients should continue to comply with all reporting requirements to ensure benefits are issued promptly once they become available.
Free Food Resources
There are over 900 food banks in LA County, to locate the nearest one to you, please visit LAFoodBank.org/FindFood or call 2-1-1.
If you are able to make a contribution, please consider donating to local food banks.
Help with Questions – Livestream & DPSS Hotline
Join me this Sunday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. for my monthly Sippin’ My Tea livestream, where I’ll be discussing the impacts of the federal government shutdown and upcoming changes to CalFresh and Medi-Cal with representatives from the LA County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS).
Tune in here: YouTube.com/@SupervisorHollyJMitchell
DPSS Customer Service Hotline If you have questions about your CalFresh benefits, you can also contact the DPSS Customer Service Hotline at 866-613-3777, Monday- Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
We understand that delays in CalFresh benefits come at an already stressful time for far too many residents who are navigating changes to public benefits under the Trump administration’s “Big Bill” (H.R. 1). We remain committed to doing everything we can to support our constituents and will continue to share timely updates and additional resources as they become available.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

Congratulations to the students who were recognized for their outstanding commitment to responsibility and respect behind the wheel. Programs like these play a vital role in our ongoing efforts to curb illegal street racing and dangerous takeovers by empowering young drivers with education, awareness, and accountability.
Street Racing Kills has been an excellent community partner, leading workshops across schools in the 2nd District and inspiring meaningful change through education and engagement.
