Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman Lauds Court Ruling That Denies Menendez Brothers' Habeas Corpus Petition
I commend Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William C. Ryan for his thoughtful and decisive ruling rejecting a new trial for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who remain in prison for the 1989 murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. This ruling closes yet another door in the brothers’ long campaign to escape accountability for their actions.

Courage Awards Presented in Pasadena to Four Who Helped Victims of Violent Crime
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office depends on community members to see something and say something in the interest of public safety — but we also honor those who go a step further and do something. LADA Assistant District Attorney Maria Ramírez led our most recent Courage Awards ceremony at the Pasadena Rotary Club, presenting commendations to four people who helped victims of violent crime.
The honorees include: • Jonathan Leyva of Pomona and Kenneth Hwang of La Verne - two passengers on a Pasadena train who helped extinguish a man set on fire and stopped a woman from setting the victim on fire for a third time.
It was horrifying moment for one man on his daily commute — and a moment of truth for two bystanders who had to make split-second decision about how to react.
Stan Slokosky was riding the Metro Gold Line in Pasadena when he was suddenly set on fire by a woman seated behind him.
Just a few rows ahead, passengers Kenneth Hwang and Jonathan Leyva were having a conversation when they saw a sudden flash of light behind them and realized Slokosky was on fire.
Without hesitation, Hwang and Leyva sprang into action. The pair immediately ripped off their jackets and used them to extinguish the flames, demonstrating tremendous courage and potentially saving Slokosky’s life.
