On the Horizon Begins By Gary Jones
Welcome to On the Horizon, the official newsletter of Marina del Rey for All—a County-led initiative to reimagine L.A.’s Marina as a more inclusive, equitable, accessible, and sustainable coastal destination. Alongside our website, mdr4all.org, this newsletter will help us stay connected with residents, lessees, patrons, and all who care about the future of the Marina.
Led by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, and championed by Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell of the Second District, Marina del Rey for All is rooted in amplifying community voices. Together, we’re expanding access, honoring public ownership, and shaping a future where everyone in Los Angeles County can connect, play and thrive in our shared coastal spaces.
In each issue, you’ll find updates on the initiative, community events, and new developments from the Department of Beaches and Harbors.

Through this County-led Marina del Rey for All initiative, we're working to ensure everyone—no matter where they live in the County—has the opportunity to connect with the coast, whether for a peaceful stroll, a family outing, or fun on the water.
Bring the whole family for free food, kids' activities, and more. Everyone who participates will be entered into a raffle for exclusive Marina del Rey gift baskets, featuring prizes like a brand-new iPad and free WaterBus rides.
Let your voice be heard—this is your Marina. Let's shape it together.

Aubrey E. Austin Jr. Park Reopens By Chantal Alatorre
After a year-long closure, Aubrey E. Austin Jr. Park—a beloved third-of-an-acre waterfront space fronting the Marina’s main channel—reopened in August 2025 with several improvements.
Renovations focused on accessibility and safety, including the removal and rebuilding of pedestrian walkways to create a smoother experience for visitors of all abilities. The project also introduced new seating areas and eco-friendly landscaping, giving community members more ways to relax and take in the Marina’s iconic views.
This reimagined space reflects the County’s ongoing commitment to safe and welcoming coastal access for all—and honors the legacy of Aubrey E. Austin Jr., a former Chair of the Small Craft Harbor Commission and a driving force behind the early public development of Marina del Rey.
“This park represents what we mean when we say Marina del Rey is for everyone,” said Warren Ontiveros, Deputy Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. “It’s about creating accessible, beautiful places where the entire community can gather, reflect, and connect while enjoying our coast.”
Aubrey E. Austin Jr. Park is located at Via Marina and Pacific Avenue, Marina del Rey, CA 90292. Stop by and enjoy one of the Marina’s most peaceful public spaces—now more accessible than ever.

The annual tree pruning window for Marina del Rey begins October 1 and runs through December 31.
This seasonal work is essential for public safety and supports healthy trees while protecting coastal birds and their nesting habitats.
Let’s work together to care for our trees while protecting the Marina’s natural beauty and our winged friends.
