Dear Neighbor,
For years, I’ve worked hand in hand with residents to ensure their voices guided the reimagining of the iconic General Hospital. Across countless conversations, the same priorities continued to emerge: affordable housing, health and wellness, family-sustaining jobs, safety, green spaces, arts and culture, and economic opportunity rooted in equity.
This week, we took a major step forward.
With the County’s latest action, Centennial Partners, the selected developer, is now authorized to begin detailed surveying and analysis related to land use, environmental conditions, architecture and engineering, sustainability, transportation, and parking. This historic project is nearly a decade in the making, and I’ve proudly championed it alongside our resilient Eastside community.
The original General Hospital building, located in Boyle Heights, opened in 1934 and served the region for more than 75 years before it was vacated after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. While it stood dormant, the building remained a powerful symbol of healing, possibility, and Los Angeles history. As Doug Smith of the Los Angeles Times recently noted in his story, “It was as much a cultural icon as a place of healing.” The building appeared in numerous films and TV shows, most famously in the opening of General Hospital. Now, its next chapter will be rooted in serving real Angelenos once again.
Next door, Los Angeles General Medical Center (LA General) continues to grow. This modern teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma center now anchors an expanding campus that includes several new behavioral health facilities. Under my leadership, we have opened a mental health urgent care center, a residential withdrawal management facility, and a 128-bed mental health rehabilitation center.
These additions are part of the County’s Restorative Care Village model, a comprehensive approach that integrates physical and behavioral health services in one location to better meet the needs of our communities.
Together, we are building more than just housing or clinics. We are creating a community space rooted in dignity and care, a place where generations can live, heal, and thrive. The revival of General Hospital is about restoring opportunity, hope, and purpose.
To every resident, advocate, partner, and stakeholder who showed up, spoke out, and believed in this vision: thank you. Your support is what moves this effort forward. This is our village, built by and for community.

The Los Angeles County Department of Aging and Disabilities is developing a five-year Strategic Plan to guide and strengthen disability services across the region. This plan will assess the current landscape, identify unmet needs, and prioritize areas for improvement.
To ensure the plan reflects the lived experiences of people with disabilities, the County is gathering input through surveys and focus groups, fostering stakeholder collaboration, and identifying strategies to expand and improve services.
The online survey is open through Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Older adults and individuals living with a disability may be eligible for a variety of supportive services, including in-home care, independent living assistance, transition services, and transportation.
These services are designed to help people remain safe, connected, and independent in their homes and communities. Whether you need short-term help or long-term support, there are options available to meet your needs.
To learn more, dial 2-1-1 and ask about Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) services.
