 Dear Neighbor,
Happy National Pet Day and Therapy Dog Appreciation Day!
I’m proud to share that, following a motion I introduced this week, Los Angeles County has officially proclaimed April 11, 2025 as National Pet Day and Therapy Dog Appreciation Day in our county.
We know from countless studies that pets can reduce stress, improve heart health, and support children’s emotional and social development. Pets are often considered beloved members of our families, and in many cases, they serve essential roles—especially dogs. From working in law enforcement, the military, and search and rescue operations, to serving as guide dogs and farm helpers, dogs make extraordinary contributions. Therapy dogs, in particular, bring comfort and healing by visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.
We’ve witnessed this firsthand in the aftermath of the January wildfires. Therapy dogs provided meaningful support to both impacted residents and first responders, helping them cope with trauma and stress.
At a time when our animal shelters are seeing an overwhelming number of animals in need, it’s more important than ever to recognize the invaluable role pets and therapy dogs play in our lives. Today isn’t just a celebration—it’s a reminder of the many adoptable pets in our Los Angeles County Animal Care Centers, waiting for a second chance at love and a forever home.
As part of this celebration, I encourage you to show some extra love to the animals in your life. And if you’re considering adopting, now is the perfect time! From April 11th to May 10th, the Department of Animal Care and Control is waiving adoption fees for dogs over 35 lbs, including microchipping and spay/neuter services.
On National Pet Day and Therapy Dog Appreciation Day, we celebrate the benefits pets bring to our mental wellness, promote adoption, and acknowledge the tireless work of therapy dogs. Let’s continue to support our local animal care centers and the animals that enrich our lives.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis

This week, I introduced a motion proclaiming April 10, 2025, as Dolores Huerta Day in Los Angeles County!
Dolores Huerta’s life is a powerful testament to resilience, resistance, and an unwavering commitment to justice. As one of the most influential labor activists of our time, her tireless advocacy for the rights of workers, immigrants, and women has left an indelible mark on our nation’s history.
Now more than ever, we honor her legacy and celebrate her incredible 95th birthday. May Dolores Huerta’s courage and determination continue to inspire generations to fight for dignity, equity, and justice for all.
¡Sí se puede!
This week, I attended the LEEAF “Voice to Action: Rebuilding Trust” event in East Los Angeles, hosted in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity. It was a powerful space for small business owners to share their voices and get the support they need to succeed.
As Supervisor of the First District, I’ve worked to build trust with local entrepreneurs—especially as we continue to face economic challenges and support those affected by the January wildfires. Small businesses are essential to our neighborhoods, and I remain committed to helping them grow and thrive.
I was thrilled to help kick off this year’s Jubilee events in the First District, right in unincorporated Bassett! Families came together to enjoy an egg hunt, Easter Bunny meet-and-greet, crafts, games, food tastings, live performances, and more.
As part of the celebration, we also recognized over $5.6 million invested in Bassett Park renovations—a much-needed project that will improve quality of life for residents throughout the Puente Valley’s unincorporated communities.
Together, we’re building a lasting legacy of opportunity, joy, and well-being.
This morning, I had the privilege of joining Metro and Community of Friends to celebrate the grand opening of the Lorena Plaza Apartments—Boyle Heights' newest affordable housing development!
This project is a shining example of how the Metro Joint Development Program creates stable housing and opportunities for Angelenos. As Chair of Metro two years ago, I had the honor of directing this initiative. Our goal is to deliver 10,000 housing units on Metro-owned properties by 2031, with at least half designated as affordable.
Together, we’re lifting up the collaboration between partners and the community to tackle housing challenges in Boyle Heights and across Los Angeles.
