Dear Neighbor,
I recently joined my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors and LA County Department Heads working closely on recovery efforts for the County’s annual advocacy meetings with representatives in the State Legislature and with Gov. Newsom.
We discussed ways to build on the State’s support in furthering recovery efforts and protecting the delivery of vital County services. Thank you to Governor Newsom and all of our State leaders for the roundtable discussion on the action the County is taking and the support needed for the long road ahead to rebuild from the devastation of the wildfires while continuing to reinforce the County’s safety net services in the face of uncertainty in federal funding, that threaten access to healthcare and other essential services for some of our most vulnerable communities.
Keep reading below to learn more about LA County’s Medi-Cal Doula Hub, Career Opportunities, and other resources.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

I recently joined my colleagues and community members in helping to usher in Nowruz, a 3,000-year-old celebration that began on March 20 and will last 13 days - marking the beginning of the Persian New Year. Thank you, Supervisor Horvath, for organizing this uplifting ceremony in partnership with the non-profit organization MTO Shahmaghsoudi, who received a scroll signed by the entire Board for their work providing mentorship and services throughout LA County.
Millions of people around the globe celebrate Nowruz which includes principles like renewal, togetherness, and the strength of community bonds.
Wishing all those celebrating throughout LA County a safe and happy Nowruz with your loved ones.

I had the honor of sharing space with dedicated community members called to serve as doulas who are now part of the LA County Medi-Cal Doula Hub. This has been years in the making, largely thanks to birth justice advocates working with the state legislature to put forward a bill signed into law by Gov. Newsom recognizing doula care as a Medi-Cal benefit.
To help ensure residents are accessing this benefit and to support our local doula workforce in becoming Medi-Cal doulas, the Board of Supervisors passed my motion to create the LA County Medi-Cal Doula Hub.
Doulas are trained professionals who provide emotional, physical, and advocacy support to individuals and families during various stages of life, including pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period.
Thank you to Dr. Sayida Peprah, Dr. Priya Batra, Felicia Francis-Edwards, Lee Walker, and Khefri Riley for your powerful remarks on the invaluable service doulas provide our communities, especially Black women who continue to face the highest rates of maternal mortality rates, making them 2.5 times more likely to die during childbirth than any other group. A special thank you to Frontline Doulas and Diversity Uplifts Inc. for being the community lead organizations working with the LA County Department of Public Health to make this initiative possible.

We gathered in the West Adams neighborhood for this month’s 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange (RJLE), centered on mobility justice and were honored to be joined by Councilmember Heather Hutt and the CD10 team.
Our powerful lineup of community leaders and mobility advocates included Yolanda Davis Overstreet with Biking While Black, Alex Ramirez of LA Walks, Adonia Lugo of the California Transportation Commission, and Eli Lipmen, Executive Director of Move LA. A special thank you to Tamika Butler for her support in helping to conceptualize today's event, which also included a screening of the documentary Biking While Black, followed by a 1.5-mile walking tour.
Proximity matters in helping to create change; that's why it was important for us to walk the streets together and share our experiences. The throughline for many of the points raised was the need for our streets to be and feel safe for every person, regardless of where they live or who they are. We have a shared responsibility to do our part in helping to keep our streets safe by paying attention on the road, sharing the road, and being open-minded about the various transportation needs of our diverse communities.
