Dear Neighbor,
I recently joined my fellow Supervisors and leaders from across LA County to raise awareness of the Report on Hate Crimes for 2023. Thank you to the County's Human Relations Commission for leading the collaborative process of compiling this necessary report.
|
|
Each number captured represents a fellow resident who has the right to live, love, worship, and be true to themselves without experiencing threats to their safety and humanity.
The increase in reported crimes is a disturbing trend that we have the power to help stop. We know there are still far too many incidents that go unreported, which is why the data from this annual report is critical for improving our strategies and shared responsibility to respond to and help prevent all forms of hate.
Join the county in standing up to hate by being accountable for our actions and how we treat each other and by reporting and getting the resources at https://www.lavshate.org/ or 2-1-1.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

2nd District Beautification Project: Transforming Empty Lots into Green Spaces and Removing 71,000 Pounds of Trash
|
|
It's always inspiring to see our next generation of leaders taking action. I recently had the pleasure of joining our 2nd District Beautification Project Clean-Up Crew members who are part of LA Conservation Corps for a design workshop. Over the past year, this amazing group of Corps members have completed more than 100 clean-ups helping to remove over 71,000 pounds of trash from our unincorporated communities. But their impact goes beyond clean-ups. They're also transforming empty lots into beautiful green spaces, designing gardens with guidance from LA Trade Tech's Professor of Architecture and Environmental Design, Marcela Oliva.
I can't wait for our fellow residents to experience the benefits of the final design projects these students will bring to life!

Advancing Equity in the County’s Procurement Process for Small and Diverse Businesses |
|
The county relies on goods and services from businesses and non-profit organizations to help us meet the needs of millions of residents. Increasing access for small businesses and organizations from communities that have historically faced barriers to work with the county has been a priority for me since taking office. With the support of the board, my office has proposed policies aimed at creating a more equitable process to address this challenge.
I appreciate the detailed updates this week from our county departments, including the Department of Economic Opportunity on the actions taken to make our procurement process more efficient and inclusive. To learn more about how small businesses and non-profits can work with the county, visit: https://doingbusiness.lacounty.gov/
Re-Opening of Monteith Park in View Park
The stormwater improvement project at Monteith Park in our unincorporated View Park community is complete and now the park is re-opened for the community to enjoy. This project involved the construction of an infiltration system to help manage stormwater and urban runoff. from 228 acres of primarily residential and commercial land from neighboring areas. The View Park Green Alley improvements portion of the project is still closed and is expected to open in January 2025.

Celebrating New Supportive Housing in West Carson
I greatly enjoyed meeting Rocio and many other of my newly housed constituents at PATH Ventures' newest supportive and affordable housing development in our unincorporated West Carson community. This beautiful four-story community site provides 111 units of supporting housing for individuals and families with low incomes and special needs.
Thank you to the County's Development Authority, Mental Health and Health Department, and Assessors office for working closely with PATH and community partners to open this site and provide wrap-around services for residents.
I look forward to continuing to work together to create many more moments like these.
Pledging My Commitment to the 2nd District
Surrounded by my fellow residents, elected and community leaders, our dedicated county workers, and my incredible team, I proudly pledged my commitment to continue serving the 2nd District for a second term. Thank you for trusting me with this honor. I am grateful for every person who has been part of the progress we have made these past four years, and I am clear that our work is not done.
I want to thank constituents Brian Bowen, Karen Qualls, Chris’ Anthony Sims, and Maria Jose Vides for administering a community oath that I was proud to accept, because it was tied to their lived experiences that are similar to so many of our residents and representative of a fundamental pledge to meet the diverse needs of our communities so that we can leave the 2nd district better than it was before I took office.
Thank you to everyone who made this swearing-in ceremony so special, including John Kim with Catalyst California, Caroline Bhalla with the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission, the Los Angeles County Fire Department Honor Guard, Goapele, Pastor James McKnight, Benin Lemus, Pastor Rene Molina, Las Colibri - the all-women mariachi band, the Koreatown Youth + Community Center drummers, Charles Fletcher, the artist Ramsess for sharing is inspiring artwork, the Girls Scouts of Inglewood, and the Wilshire Ebell Theatre.
