Dear Colleagues,

A note to wish you warm holidays ahead and offer news, updates, and opportunities, including an application for a position on our Arts and Culture staff, below.

Every year, the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission selects three community members to recognize Native American Heritage Month. As we close November, we recognize this year’s honorees: Kenny Ramos—Spirit of Creativity, Cynthia Ruiz—Spirit of Community, and Chief Anthony Morales—Spirit of Tradition. We're proud to be the home of the LANAIC and congratulate the honorees on their contributions to culture and community. As we reflect, I again invite you to view the Land Acknowledgment Toolkit and "We Are Still Here: A Report on Past, Present, and Ongoing Harms Against Local Tribes" which recently received the Changemaker Award from the LA County Quality and Productivity Commission.

Speaking of Los Angeles’ cultures and communities, we congratulate our colleagues at the LA County Natural History Museum on this month’s opening of NHM Commons, a new community hub, exhibit area, and theater. One of its highlights is Barbara Carrasco’s restored 80-foot mural, L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective, which tells the story of LA through dozens of vignettes woven into the flowing hair of la Reina de Los Ángeles (the Queen of Los Angeles). I joined Supervisors, Commissioners, and leaders to celebrate this incredible addition to Los Angeles.

Last week, our Research and Evaluation team was on hand at the LA County GIS Day in Gloria Molina Grand Park, showing off geographic map-minded projects and initiatives including our Civic Art Collection, the Arts and Culture Near You map, and the Arts Ed Profile.

We're bringing sound art to LA County parks in Civic Art, and more. Read on!

In gratitude,
Kristin Sakoda

NEW CIVIC ARTWORKS BRING SOUND ART TO PARKS
Sound Art Park Restrooms Project Banner Image
The Department of Arts and Culture is pleased to mark a significant cultural milestone with the installation of its first permanent sound artworks at Atlantic Avenue Park and Athens Park. These artworks will present a unique auditory experience located in an unconventional setting: the parks’ public restrooms, inviting a reevaluation of how and where art can intersect with public life.

The choice of location plays a critical role in democratizing access to art, making it a part of everyday experience rather than something encountered only in traditional venues. This approach not only broadens the audience’s interaction with art but also integrates it seamlessly into daily routines, prompting reflections on history and culture in moments typically devoid of such considerations.

LA COunty GIS Day

Matt Augustin and Amy Ben-Kiki.
On November 20, 2024, our Research & Evaluation team tabled (for the first time) at LA County GIS Day at Gloria Molina Grand Park, engaging with county employees, students, and community members. Attendees stopped by our table and learned more about our geographic-minded projects and initiatives, such as our Civic Art Collection, the Arts and Culture Near You map, the Arts Ed Profile, and expressed enthusiasm for arts and culture. R&E gathered more than twenty new signups for our department newsletter and distributed dozens of our GIS at LA County Arts and Culture zines.

IN BRIEF

  • Sharing that applications are now open for the 2025 Renée Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Awards. They are designed to encourage and expand collaborations between early career researchers and arts practitioners, and provide funding and mentorship to early career scholars and artists working to understand how aesthetic experiences measurably impact the brain and body, in an emergent field called neuroarts.
  • We received a grant from The Music Man Foundation to support the LA County Arts Education Collective. The Strengthening the Sector funds will strengthen arts education across LA County’s 80 school districts through strategic planning and coaching, matching grants, professional development for educators, and data collection and analysis. Thank you to The Music Man Foundation for their continued support as we work together to expand and sustain arts education for all young people, in all schools, and in all communities!
