LA County Resources and Tools to Combat Identity-Based Hate and Violence
|
|
I want to make sure you’re aware of a new county resource page:Preventing and Combating Identity-Based Hate and Violence in LA County. This page shares strategies for residents, students, and organizations to help end hate and support survivors. It also includes a helpful Community Safety Resource Guide.
Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors approved my motion with Chair Horvath calling for a strategic and equitable approach to addressing the concerning rise in identity-based hate. The latest report from the LA County Human Relations Commission showed that in 2022, reported hate crimes reached its second-highest level in two decades.
We have a collective responsibility to stand up to racism, Asian Hate, anti-Blackness, antisemitism, anti-islamophobia, anti-LGBTQ, anti-trans hate, and hate of any form. Please add this site ceo.lacounty.gov/ardi/combatting-hate/ to your toolbox of resources, including LA vs. Hate. To report a hate crime, call 2-1-1 or visit: lavshate.org.

Infrastructure LA - Updates on the Equity in Infrastructure Pledge
|
|
I was honored to speak at the LA Infrastructure Forum, an annual event organized by Engineering News-Record. Last year at this event I joined leaders from across LA County to sign the Equity in Infrastructure Pledge at this event. It was good to come back to shared how the County is doing its part to advance equity in infrastructure projects: we tripled the number of small businesses getting county contracts, established a Small Business Revolving Loan Fund to support startup and operational costs, and are working on a wide range of technical assistance initiatives to open doors to County contracts. These are just a few examples of the ongoing work that the County is doing to provide equitable opportunity and access for small and historically disadvantaged businesses and workers.

Recap of Nov Racial Justice Learning Exchange: The Intersection of Art and Racial Justice
We came together for our November 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange event, 'Celebrating Diversity at the Intersection of Art and Racial Justice.' This event focused on deepening our understanding of the role arts and culture plays in advancing racial justice and collective healing. We started off with a tour featuring artwork in the 2nd District including “Woman in Bloom” a piece at California State University Dominguez Hills and "Monument of Love: Mother and Child” at Sankofa Park in Destination Crenshaw.
Following the tour, we partnered with LA Commons to give residents an opportunity to make their own pieces tied to symbols representing community and unity with local talented artists Guillermo Alvarez, Eric "King Cre 8" Walker, and Brittney Price.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. To learn more about upcoming 2nd District RJLE events, visit mitchell.lacounty.gov/racialjustice/.
