Dear Neighbor,
LA County's Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs) ordinance is now in effect! I was proud to have the support of the Board of Supervisors in passing the motion to create this ordinance, which allows LA County to align with the state in providing a pathway for unregulated home cooks and sidewalk vendors to become permitted.
LA County’s Department of Public Health is now accepting applications for MEHKOs. MEHKOs can serve up to 90 meals a week and up to $100,000 in annual sales. To help new applicants, LA County is waiving the $597 initial fee for the first 1,000 approved applicants. This is available on a first come, first-serve basis through June 30, 2026, or until funds run out. To learn more about the program and to apply, visit
http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/eh/business/microenterprise-home-kitchen-operation.htm
Los Angeles County has over 50,000 unpermitted home cooks and sidewalk vendors and is now the 15th jurisdiction in the state to authorize MEHKOs. MEHKOs allow home cooks to participate in the formal economy while helping to protect public health and brick-and-mortar businesses.
Read the recent New York Times story here to learn how MEHKOs is inspiring diverse entrepreneurs to turn their cooking into a licensed operation.
