Greetings,

This October, in a first-of-its-kind partnership with the County’s Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative (ARDI) and the LA City/County Native American Indian Commission, we honored Indigenous People’s Day by supporting two cultural events with The Music Center and Indigenous-led arts organization Chapter House that provided artmaking, cultural activities, music, food, and more to foster awareness, respect, and understanding of the ongoing cultural contributions of Indigenous people. Thank you to all the partners, artists, and community.

Next month November is Native American Heritage Month. I invite you to view the "We Are Still Here: A Report on Past, Present, and Ongoing Harms Against Local Tribes" which recently received the Changemaker Award from the LA County Quality and Productivity Commission.

October is also Disability Employment Awareness Month. We know disability is part of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and shout out to all the arts organizations, grantees, and creatives expanding access and artistry in the field of arts and culture.

There are many more opportunities and updates below. The PAiD Artists in Development program from our Civic Art Division continues to level the public art playing field; our Arts Education and Youth Development staff convened its growing youth development network and continues to implement our Creative Wellbeing initiative; our Research and Evaluation team keeps us all in check in terms of metrics and program efficacy; and we are actively seeing panelists from the community like you to help us review and score grant applications.

It is a very busy fall, and as always, we grateful to you for all your collaboration.

Onward!
Kristin Sakoda

PANELIST OPPORTUNITY!

Each year, we put out a call for LA County arts workers to serve on review panels for our Grants and Civic Art Division programs. These panelists review, assess, and score grant applications and artist proposals, and their assessments become the basis for applicant ranking and recommendations to our Arts Commission.

Individuals can nominate up to four panelists (including themselves) for one or more programs. Civic Art panels occur on a rolling basis, while Grants panels tend to take place at the start of the calendar year. All panelists receive an honoraria for their time and effort.

SMU DataArts has released a new report, Federal Recovery Funds for Local Arts and Culture: Tactics from 11 Creative Communities, examining how Local Arts Agencies (LAAs) distributed federal COVID-19 relief funding to arts and cultural organizations across 11 cities including Los Angeles. The report highlights the Department of Arts and Culture’s efforts to distribute $31.4M of relief funding, and identifies key tactics employed to distribute unprecedented levels of relief funding efficiently and fairly to organizations. These actions helped sustain the arts during a time of crisis and reaffirmed the vital role of the arts in driving economic, civic, and social engagement!

BLUE NILE (Cosmogram #2) by Adee Roberson.
We announced the Public Artists in Development (PAiD) program's artist council this summer. Since then, the eight-member group has been hard at work, providing recommendations to help shape LA County public art policy, as well as creating temporary artworks for the public to enjoy.

These temporary projects engaged communities and furthered the group’s artistic goals, culminating in the creation of sculptural installations, pop-up events, and performance-based artworks that were on display throughout August and September.

We invite you to learn more about the artists and explore their projects!

ARTS EDUCATION FORUM: RECAP

Tree of Life by the De La Torre Brothers.
The Arts Education Forum: Hope and Healing through Arts-Based Systems of Care took place on October 23, with producing partners Southern California Grantmakers, the Center for Strategic Partnerships, and the LA County Office of Child Protection. Youth leaders, philanthropic funders, and County colleagues discussed growing efforts to embed the healing arts into services for youth in foster care and other system-impacted young people. At the core of this work is the importance of centering our shared experience as human beings to engage with youth in ways that are genuine and intentional. We also heard questions about, and new ideas for, opportunities and sites for collaboration. The importance of including community voice and making the language of policy and advocacy accessible was emphasized, especially as a foundation for increasing meaningful community engagement. Creative Wellbeing Data Dashboards 2023 - 24
Photo of a man and woman dancing next to one another

Our Arts Ed Collective's Creative Wellbeing initiative is a mental health support system that uses healing-informed arts instruction for systems-impacted and foster youth, and the adults that serve them. Teaching artists are key to the initiative, and over the course of the last two years, they provided Creative Wellbeing engagement through in-person and virtual direct services, professional development sessions, and arts-based workshops across LA County.

Throughout this time, our Research and Evaluation Division surveyed young people and adults receiving direct services and participating in some of these special events. From these surveys, our researchers developed two end-of-year reports that summarize the survey data and elaborate on learnings about Creative Wellbeing in the communities served.
