I was proud to attend the grand opening of The Moonstone, a 20-unit Project Homekey development that supports residents transitioning out of homelessness by providing permanent supportive homes along with on-site supportive services managed by Century Oasis Residential Services.
Located in Redondo Beach, this project was brought to life through a partnership between the City of Redondo Beach, the Redondo Beach Housing Authority, Los Angeles County, and the State of California.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible and to the teams that will provide ongoing support to help keep residents housed.

Racial Justice Learning Exchange Event- Screening of “Tending Nature” & Discussion |
|
"Tending Nature" is a powerful film on how indigenous communities across California keep their culture and heritage alive through caring for their land. I appreciated the insightful discussion that followed our screening of this film for our monthly 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange.
We discussed how we can honor nature and our Indigenous communities through education and learning from past injustices and shared how we care for ourselves and our neighborhoods.
Thank you to Gardena Mayor Tasha Cerda and Caroline Bhalla, with the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission for being part of the discussion and sharing your indigenous heritage with us.
You can watch the film on PBS here: https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/tending-nature/special/indigenous-land-stewardship.
A special thank you to the Gardena Cinema for hosting us, this is the only single-screen, family-owned movie theater in our district! To learn more about the 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange, visit https://mitchell.lacounty.gov/racialjustice.

Celebrating A Sense of Home - Housing for Former Foster Youth
A Sense of Home is helping to prevent homelessness among our foster youth by providing them with homes and building a supportive community for former foster youth.
Earlier this year, my team joined A Sense of Home for one of their Home Creation Days to help Anna and her sweet 5-month-old baby girl move into their apartment. We spent a Saturday assembling furniture, hanging pictures, and putting dishes away to help turn Anna's house into a home.
This week, it was an honor to join Mayor Bass in speaking about the importance of community partners like A Sense of Home in our fight to end homelessness. LA County is home to the largest foster youth population in the nation. We are committed to doing all we can to prevent children from entering the child welfare system and ensuring those who age out are set up for success; this is why partners like A Sense of Home are so important. Thank you to Nicole Avant and Ted Sarandos for your leadership.
A special thank you to some of the top volunteers with A Sense of Home that my office recognized for their commitment to paying it forward for other young people moving into their first-ever homes: Michelle Gutierrez, Candice Russaw, Brittany James, Quanice Hawkins, Jennifer Barrera, Monica Zavala, and Elizabeth Robinson.
