da-nl20241011-DA-on-Menendez-Brothers-Case

“As of late, there has been a tremendous amount of interest and misinformation about the case involving Lyle and Erik Menendez,” District Attorney George Gascón said. “My Office takes habeas petitions and requests for resentencing very seriously and each aspect of the case is comprehensively reviewed by a team of legal experts. My Office is reviewing new evidence in the Menendez Brothers’ case; no decisions have been made. I firmly believe that our job as prosecutors is to seek the truth and truth will lead to justice. And I intend to do so in this case.”

District Attorney Gascón Announces New 25-Count Grand Jury Indictment Against Atlas Metal, Others

da-nl20241011-Indictment-Against-Atlas-Metal

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that the S&W Atlas Iron and Metal Corp., and its owners were charged in a new 25-count indictment, which includes a charge related to the explosion in a Aug. 12 blast at the scrap metal recycler, adjacent to Jordan High School in Watts.

“Our children and the community of Watts deserve a safe and healthy environment to learn and grow in,” District Attorney Gascón said. “We will hold companies accountable when they put profits over people and endanger the well-being of our neighborhoods. This latest charge is a reminder that the safety of our communities must come first. No business has the right to jeopardize public health, especially in areas that impact our children’s futures.”

District Attorney George Gascón and LADA’s Latine Advisory Board brought together powerful voices at the Hall of Justice for an impactful discussion: “Breaking the Cycle: Incarceration of Latine Youth."

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and following L.A. County’s Probation Oversight Commission’s recent demographics report showing that Latino youth represent 57% of L.A. County’s juvenile detention population, community leaders and advocates came together to address the unique systemic challenges impacting Latine youth in the justice system.

Together, we explored solutions to break the cycle of incarceration and uplift our youth. We remain committed to dismantling barriers and creating pathways to thriving communities.

LADA's Resentencing Efforts Help Michael Smith Rebuild His Life After Three Strikes Law Sentence

da-nl20241011-Michael-Smith

In March 1997, a 27-year-old man was convicted of threatening a public officer—a crime that typically carries a maximum penalty of three years. Unfortunately, under California's three strikes law, Michael Smith was handed a staggering 25 years to life in prison due to his previous criminal history. This case speaks to the devastating effects and fundamental criticism of the “tough-on-crime” policies of the 1990s.

Thanks to the leadership of District Attorney George Gascón and the work of LADA’s Resentencing Unit, Smith was released in 2022. He is just one of 320 individuals resentenced under D.A. Gascón. Only 4 of the 320 have received new convictions — none of which were a crime of violence.

Since his release, Michael started a successful business, allowing him to thrive, support his family, and give back to the community. Congratulations Michael on your new life!
