A message from our Director
Bolero Familiar by Wayne Healy. |
Dear Colleagues,
First, for September, we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, as declared in this motion by Supervisors Hilda L. Solis and Janice Hahn. We celebrated by uplifting some incredible artists with work on display in Whittier’s Los Nietos Community Senior Center, and collaborating with LA Plaza de Cultural y Artes, Michelin starred Chef Gilberto Cetina, City of Paris, and Food Temple to highlight food as culture as part of our LA/Paris Cultural Olympiad artistic collaboration projects.
This month we were also excited to bring back our LA County Arts Intern Summit day in person, where I had the joy of welcoming over 60 college students to Leimert Park for a day of fun, learning, cultural connection, and networking! Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Arts Commission President Leticia Buckley, and I provided remarks, followed by breakout sessions including a drum circle at World Stage, professional headshots provided by Las Fotos Project, a walking tour of the community, and a conversation on art and technology with artist Ben Caldwell. We ended the day with a panel of arts and culture leaders talking about the role of culture in their careers and in stewarding the past, engaging the present, and envisioning the future of Leimert Park and all the communities of Los Angeles County. Check out a video snapshot of the day at this Instagram Reel.
Below, I invite you to explore additional updates, including grant application deadlines for organizations, new opportunities for artists in both our Public Artists in Development (PAiD) and Creative Strategist programs, and more. We are grateful to build infrastructure and opportunity for arts and culture field as vital to our civic lives.
Finally, I hope you will join us in congratulating Fabian Debora—Los Angeles artist, former member of the LA County Cultural Equity and Inclusion Initiative Advisory Committee, founder of Homeboy Arts, and longtime partner of our department and the Arts Commission in our arts and justice work—on his National Endowment for the Arts Heritage award!
Onward! Kristin Sakoda |
