Dear Neighbor,
August is National Black Business Month. To celebrate, we are spotlighting some of the many Black-owned businesses in our district that not only serve our communities but also enrich the cultural fabric of LA County. We recently featured the inspiring journeys of SÜPRMARKT, Honee Bee Transportation, and Antique Stove Heaven. Stay tuned to our pages (X, Instagram, Facebook) as we continue to share more stories.
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Los Angeles County’s Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) is committed to supporting small business owners and entrepreneurs in launching and growing their businesses. DEO is home to the Office of Small Business (OSB), which offers many resources, including access to free one-on-one business counseling sessions and specialized workshops and support for businesses in becoming government contractors.
If you’re a small business owner who would like to access any of the resources shared, you can connect with the Office of Small Business in the following ways:

Girls Academic Leadership Academy Opening Day & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony |
|
The Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA) recently reopened with a new campus surrounded by Mount Saint Mary's University and USC. GALA is the first public all-girls high school in the LA Unified School District, with a specific focus on preparing students for postsecondary degrees and opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields, such as computer science and biotechnology. It is inspiring to see the school expand, and I look forward to more young ladies gaining the skills and support they need to achieve their personal goals. |

Celebrating 50 Years of the Community Development Block Grant Program |
|
This year, the LA County Development Authority (LACDA) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. This federal grant program has helped bring vital resources like health centers, schools, and parks to communities throughout LA County.
I joined Emilio Salas, Executive Director of LACDA, Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove, the Evermont team, and community members to commemorate the impact of the CDBG program at the revitalized Vermont/Manchester corner in South LA. From being a pivotal location in the '92 uprising for justice to a vacant lot for years and now the home of SEED School LA and a new shopping and metro area, I couldn't think of a better location that exemplifies the transformative impact the Community Development Block Grant program can help make.
Many other assets in our district, including Willowbrook Library, Florence Library, Magic Johnson Park, and Martin Luther King Hospital, have been made possible thanks in part to funding from the Community Development Block Grant program. To learn more, visit: hudexchange.info/programs/cdbg/
