Dear Neighbor,
Since mid-May, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has seen consistent increases in reported COVID-19 cases.
As families return from summer travel and children prepare to go back to school in the coming weeks, protection from COVID-19 infection remains important. Being proactive to prevent illness can significantly reduce the risk of travel disruptions, last-minute cancellations, and inadvertently spreading illness, ensuring a more enjoyable end of summer season for everyone.
Vaccination remains the most powerful tool to protect against the severe effects of COVID-19. Doses of the 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine are still available for residents 65 and older and provide added protection against severe illness and death from COVID-19. Residents 65 and older can get a dose of the updated vaccine four months after their previous dose. For information about where to get vaccinated, visit ph.lacounty.gov/vaccines.
An updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 will also be available this fall in Los Angeles County. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months and older receive an updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine this fall whether or not they have ever previously been vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine.
COVID-19 testing is still recommended for anyone who suspects they have COVID-19 symptoms or who has had a recent exposure to COVID-19. Free tests are available throughout Los Angeles County and at local pharmacies through most insurance plans. More information is available at ph.lacounty.gov/COVIDtests.
Individuals testing positive should stay away from others until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication and symptoms have resolved. Masking when around others is necessary to reduce transmission for 10 days after testing positive or after symptoms started. Free and low-cost therapeutics that can prevent serious illness from COVID-19 remain available in Los Angeles County. To learn more about medicines to treat COVID-19 visit ph.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/medication/.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis

For those of you who don't know, National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between residents and law enforcement. It provides a great opportunity to bring people together through block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits, and much, much more.
This year, my office put together a regional National Night Out event in the San Gabriel Valley community of Hacienda Heights. It featured various exhibitors from Los Angeles County departments and community organizations, as well as free food and refreshments thanks to McDonalds and Starbucks.
As I have consistently shared, public safety is a charge I don’t take lightly. To that end, I was proud to present the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department with $1.6 million check at the event for services in Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights, and other unincorporated communities in the Puente Valley.
I am grateful to Sheriff Robert Luna's partnership, and look forward to our continued collaboration together in keeping our communities safe.
Celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on the big screens at The Music Center! Featured events include soccer, track & field, breaking, and basketball.
Plus show off your moves on an open dance floor and enjoy a breaking demonstration and performance featuring Zulu Gremlin, Mr. Wave, and Los Angeles County-based dancers.
We encourage Angelenos to Go Metro but free parking will also be accommodated for the first 250 cars in The Music Center's main garage.
Los Angeles County's Internal Services Department and WeLink Communications (WeLink) have partnered to bring affordable and reliable broadband internet to underserved areas in unincorporated East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights. WeLink will offer a low-cost home internet plan starting at $25 per month to 50,000 qualified households. They will also offer plans starting at $65 per month to households without qualification requirements.
The theft of CalFresh and CalWORKs benefits, as well as General Relief funds due to EBT skimming is a problem for the State of California, Los Angeles County, and especially for those who need these benefits most. Stay a step ahead of thieves by protecting your personal information and benefits from EBT skimming and fraud.
Taking care of your well-being when it’s hot means taking care of both your physical and mental health. Extreme heat can add to the burden of everyday stress and affect your mental health.
Fleas are the most common external parasite for our four-legged friends. They can live for as few as 13 days or as long as 12 months, and during their lifespan they can produce millions of offspring.
Ticks are parasites that feed on blood and can plague our dogs and cats and may not be noticeable to us or our pets. They can be found living in tall brush or grass where they can attach themselves to dogs and outdoor cats or can be transferred from pets coming into the household from outdoors. Usually ticks will attach near the head, neck or ears, but can also be found anywhere on a pet’s body.
With warmer weather, it's important to be vigilant about preventing ticks and fleas on your pets.
