 Safe Fun in the Sun
Summer is here, and so are the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunlight is important to help your body make vitamin D, but it is also important to protect yourself. The sun’s UV rays can cause wrinkles, sunburns, eye irritation and skin cancer or melanoma.
July is UV Safety Awareness Month. To stay safe in the sun:
- Stay in the shade when the sun is at its hottest from 10 am – 4pm.
- Apply and reapply sunscreen.
- Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Darkness doesn’t mean UV protection.
- Wear a hat and long-sleeved clothing.
The sun can also cause extreme heat. Being out in the sun during extreme heat can lead to a heat stroke. If you have symptoms like heavy sweating, pale skin, extreme weakness, dizziness, fast and shallow breathing, please go to urgent care or to your nearest emergency room.
