BAP: Program End Date Announcement

CDC has announced that the Bridge Access Program (BAP), that provides free COVID-19 vaccines to adults with limited or no insurance, will now end in August 2024, just before the arrival of the updated 2024 – 2025 COVID-19 vaccine. Funding that was previously expected to be available to purchase additional vaccine for the Bridge Access Program was rescinded by Congress and no additional federal funding for COVID-19 vaccine for adults has been identified at this time.

BAP Timeline

  • June 5, 2024: the FDA Vaccines and Related Biologic Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) will meet to discuss and make recommendations on the selection of strain(s) to be included in the 2024-2025 Formula for COVID-19 vaccines.
  • June 26-28, 2024: CDC ACIP anticipated to review and vote on recommendations for 2024-25 season
  • Late Summer – Fall: 2024-25 vaccine anticipated to be available for use.
  • BAP Program ends when the 2023-24 vaccine is no longer recommended, and the 2024-25 vaccine is recommended.

BAP Resources Will Remain on Eziz

  • Webpages and job aids created to support BAP will remain on EZIZ.
  • Materials will be archived in September after the BAP program ends.

Are you Ready for the Move? (VFC Transition to myCAvax)

CDPH is aligning all publicly funded programs (including VFC) to one single system – myCAvax. With this transition, myVFCvaccines will no longer serve as your home for ordering VFC vaccine, submitting returns and transfers, and other VFC Program-related activities.

With the transition from MyVFCvaccines to myCAvax quickly approaching, please be aware of the following important dates:

Beginning Monday, May 27, 2024, myVFCvaccines will have limited access:

  • Ordering will be closed to all providers. For providers that submitted an order by May 24, 2024, myVFCvaccines will allow you to submit order corrections if needed; submit them promptly as requested by the VFC program by May 31, 2024.
  • Manually document any transfers, returns, or waste and have them ready to enter in myCAvax when the system goes live on June 10.
  • MyVFCVaccines will allow you to report any temperature excursions in SHOTS until May 31, 2024.
  • After Friday, May 31, 2024, any unapproved MyVFCvaccines orders must be resubmitted by VFC providers in myCAvax after go-live.
  • Contact the VFC Customer Service Center for any shipping incidents.

Monday, June 10, 2024:

  • The VFC program will launch in myCAvax.
  • Conduct all VFC account management activities in myCAvax from June 10th moving forward, including: submitting orders, returns, transfers, updating storage units, etc.
  • Do not log in to MyVFCvaccines to manage or order VFC vaccine from June 10th moving forward.
  • Storage and Handling incident reporting will take place in myCAvax from June 10th moving forward. Providers will no longer record storage and handling incidents in SHOTS.

Providers are encouraged to continue to contact the VFC Customer Service Center and CDPH Provider Call Center for support related to the transition.

Tips to Prepare for the VFC Transition to my myCAvax

Q & A:

Q: My site has an inactive myCAvax account, but the vaccine coordinators in myCAvax are different than for VFC. Will the account be automatically activated on June 10? Will the vaccine coordinators from MyVFCvaccines automatically be updated in myCAvax?

  • The primary and backup coordinators from MyVFCvaccines will be added into myCAvax and automatically activated during the launch on June 10.

Q: I had a myCAvax login from when I had to order COVID-19 vaccines previously.  Will I need to get new login credentials?

  • No, your credentials will remain the same. You will see a VFC Program tile added to your home page.

Q: Do we need to request a new log in or will we be emailed?

  • You will be emailed - we will set them up automatically.

Q: My current log in for myCAvax is deactivated. Will it be activated prior to June 10th? Should I send an email to reactivate?

  • No, we will automatically reactive those user accounts if you are listed as a primary or backup for the VFC program.

Q: I am listed as primary/backup VFC coordinator for multiple sites. Will I have access through one myCAvax account or will I have multiple myCAvax accounts created for each VFC account?

  • If all of those sites are part of one organization, you will use one set of credentials to access all of them.

Benefits of VFC Program Enrollment for Birth Hospitals

VFC Program covers the entire cost of immunizations for eligible patients:

  • Single dose of Hep B at birth was previously the only immunization recommended for newborns
    • Commercial Cost: ~$28 / dose
  • Nirsevimab is now recommended for newborns at birth during respiratory virus season
    • Commercial Cost: ~$520 / dose
  • The financial impact for the implementation of Nirsevimab is significant.
    • Based on 2022 Medi-Cal Births alone (114, 487) among non enrolled hospitals, Cost of  Nirsevimab = $59.5 M

CDC Vaccines Programs VFC Awardees

238 hospitals currently provide birthing services

    • 64 (27%) already enrolled in VFC Program
    • 174 (73%) not currently enrolled
    • In 2022, these facilities delivered 114,487 Medi-Cal births

Goal: Identify top birthing hospitals, considering % of their Medi-Cal births among other criteria for prioritization, and focus enhanced outreach/support for VFC Program enrollment by August 31, 2024 While the Ultimate goal is to enroll all 174 birth hospitals, initial prioritization for outreach is 50 hospitals.

Immunizations Before Summer Travel

Immunization of families heading abroad is critical to protect them against measlespertussis, and other diseases causing recent outbreaks. Recall patients that are falling behind on these vaccinations. Also, don’t forget to protect young children 6-11 months who are about to travel abroad with a recommended accelerated dose of MMR.

Encourage your patients to get caught up on any immunizations at least a month before travel. If you do not stock certain travel vaccines, direct patients to a travel medical clinic.

Increase in Invasive Serogroup Y Meningococcal Disease in the U.S. (3/28/24 CDC Health Advisory) and suggested dosing

Healthcare providers should:

1) Have a heightened suspicion for meningococcal disease, particularly among populations disproportionately affected: ages 30-60y, Black/African American, people living with HIV.

2) Be aware that patients may present without symptoms typical of meningitis, and

3) Ensure that all people recommended for meningococcal vaccination, including people with HIV, are up to date for meningococcal vaccines.

  • Incidence rates of meningococcal disease have declined in the United States since the 1990s and remain low
  • Incidence decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic and is returning to pre-pandemic levels in California and the US
  • The proportion of serogroup Y cases is also increasing in California, but the increase is general (no disproportionately affected groups observed so far in California)
