LA County Library Launches New Summer Stars Tutoring Program To Support Young Learners

Free In-Person Tutoring for Grades 1-6 in Reading and Math at Select Locations to Address Community Needs

Los Angeles County, CA – LA County Library is excited to introduce the new Summer Stars tutoring program, which offers free in-person tutoring for students in grades 1-6. Developed in response to requests from parents, this initiative aims to provide extra support in reading and math to help young learners excel.

"We believe in the potential of every child, and our Summer Stars tutoring program is designed to help students shine brighter academically," said LA County Library Director Skye Patrick. "By offering live, free in-person tutoring with credentialed tutors, we aim to support children as they build essential skills for success."

Summer Stars is funded by the American Rescue Plan and Assemblymember Lisa Calderon, District 56, who shared, “Libraries are foundational to the social and cultural development of our children, especially those in vulnerable communities where broadband access is limited. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many students fell behind, which continues to severely impact their education. However, because of the Summer Stars tutoring program, students will become better equipped with the tools to excel in their learning.”

The Summer Stars tutoring program features two 4-week sessions:

  • Session 1: Reading, June 18 - July 11, 2024
  • Session 2: Math, July 16 - August 8, 2024

Sessions run from Tuesday to Thursday each week. Participants are required to sign up for 30-minute appointments on all three days, any time from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. Tutors will provide enrichment activities for those who remain beyond their tutoring appointments.

Participating students will work with a trained professional from StudentNest, a tutoring company with over 20 years of experience providing professional tutoring services across the nation.

Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. For more information and to complete an interest form, visit LACountyLibrary.org/summer-stars.
