Dear Neighbor,
We consistently hear from residents on the harmful impact illegal street racing and takeovers has on their community. Earlier this year, my office hosted a community meeting, 'Taking Back Our Streets,' to create a space for constituents to share input on ways we can work together to address this critical issue. As a follow-up to this event, LA County will host a Community Symposium on Ending Illegal Street Takeovers and Racing on Saturday, May 18 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., at Compton College: 1111 East Artesia Blvd. Compton CA 90221.
We are bringing together representatives working on this issue and residents to share perspectives, brainstorm solutions, and create recommendations for ending illegal street racing and takeovers. This event is free and open to all. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please register today and share with your friends, family, and neighbors.
Your lived experiences and view on this critical issue matters and we want to hear from you.
This event is a longer format to allow more time for insights and feedback to be shared. You can select the timeframe that works best for you to attend or stay for the whole day. To register and get additional event details, please visit https://bit.ly/TakeoversAndRacing.
We look forward to your engagement on this critical topic for our unincorporated communities.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

Addressing Homelessness: Florence-Firestone Vacant Lot Cleanup
|
|
Last weekend, the County’s Internal Services Department Custodial & Landscaping Division conducted a cleanup at a vacant Probation Department lot at the corner of Central Avenue and 77th Street in the Florence-Firestone community. Eight vehicles were removed from the site. The site has been cleaned up, fencing has been added, and “No Trespassing” signs were installed. Thank you to the County partners on this effort: CEO Homeless Initiative, LA County Sheriff’s Department Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST), and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) who coordinated outreach to people experiencing homelessness on the lot.
To report an encampment in your community, download The Works App or call 888-838-6746.

West Rancho Dominguez Community Meeting
Following an RV encampment cleanup in the West Rancho Dominguez community, my office and the County’s Homeless Initiative joined community members for a follow-up meeting at Community Missionary Baptist Church to discuss the recent RV encampment cleanup on 148th Street and the ongoing work that the County is doing to connect people experiencing homelessness to housing.
To stay informed and engaged on this issue, we invite members of the West Rancho Dominguez community to our West Carson Community Office on Wednesday, May 8 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm to meet with your Constituent Services representative and learn how to connect to county services and get your questions addressed regarding issues like parking enforcement, homeless encampments, street vending, and street takeovers. Register here to attend. To learn more about the County’s Pathway Home program, visit https://homeless.lacounty.gov/pathway-home/.
Update on Parking Enforcement in Unincorporated Communities
In the unincorporated areas throughout the County, many residents face a lack of parking enforcement in their neighborhoods, including limited service hours. My office remains committed to finding solutions to this issue. The Board approved my motion calling for the County’s Chief Executive Office to review the plans presented by Public Works and the Sheriff's Department to determine which department would be best suited to lead parking enforcement in our unincorporated communities. The motion also calls for quarterly performance reports on parking enforcement services to enhance service and accountability in parking enforcement throughout the County’s unincorporated communities. You can read the full motion here.
Board of Supervisors Approves Fair Workweek Ordinance
Originating from a motion I presented with Supervisor Horvath in 2023, the Board of Supervisors has officially approved a Fair Workweek Ordinance. The new law applies to unincorporated LA County and allows for retail workers to have increased control and predictability over their work schedules, including additional compensation for last-minute changes. Outreach to help inform and prepare businesses to implement Fair Workweek practices is happening now to prepare for enforcement for this ordinance which begins July 2025. If you’re a small business that needs more info, please email FWW@dcba.lacounty.gov or call 800-593-8222.
Playground Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Roosevelt Park
I recently joined LA County Parks for the ribbon cutting of an incredible new playground at Roosevelt Park, one of the County’s oldest recreational centers. Thanks to their hard work and funding from Proposition 68, our community has a new space that our kids can enjoy this summer. Play areas aren't just about fun—they're about giving children opportunities to engage in physical activity and social interaction while sharpening their cognitive skills.
