Dear Neighbor,
Black Maternal Health Week starts next Thursday, April 11, and goes through April 17. Since 2021, the Board of Supervisors has stood with me in ensuring LA County joins in uplifting this national week of awareness and action, including The Day of the Black Infant on April 16. To learn more about upcoming Black Maternal Health Week events and available maternal health services and resources, visit blackinfantsandfamilies.org.
Black Maternal Health Week was established by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to raise awareness about the national maternal healthcare crisis in the Black Community. In Los Angeles County, Black women are four times more likely to die due to pregnancy-related complications than White women, and Black infants are three times more likely to die before their first birthday than White infants.
In February last year, the Board approved my motion to expand access to doula services across LA County. Doula care improves pregnancy experiences and birthing outcomes. Doula care is now a Medi-Cal-covered benefit. My office is proud to have worked with the Department of Public Health to create a hub where women can get the technical assistance, support, and training they need to become Medi-Cal-certified and skilled doulas.
We cannot end the unacceptably high rates of Black infant and maternal deaths without the support of our community partners. Thank you to all the organizations, including Black Women for Wellness, the California Black Women’s Health Project, and countless others committed to advancing Black Women’s health and wellness by making programming and services accessible to our most vulnerable populations.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors

Parking Enforcement Community Dialogue |
|
Over 60 residents joined us this week for a community dialogue on improving parking enforcement in our unincorporated communities. Attendees received updates on what has been done and the current status of the County's efforts to address this issue. Thank you to everyone who participated–including our Officers from the Parking Enforcement Detail. We heard residents' concerns that included parking signs regularly being disregarded, delayed street cleanings, difficulties accessing driveways and small businesses, and double parking in neighborhoods.
To find out who to contact and report neighborhood parking concerns, go to: lasd.org/parking-enforcement/ or find and call your local Sheriff’s Patrol Station at lasd.org/stations/.
My office is committed to working with residents to find equitable and efficient solutions for parking enforcement. Thank you to everyone who joined us. We will continue to keep you updated as we work towards solutions for this issue.
