FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WHAT: As part of Black History Month, County of Los Angeles (County) Second District Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell will join the Clady family along with County of Los Angeles Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone and others to host a ceremony to dedicate Fire Station 58 in honor of retired Assistant Fire Chief Hershel Clady who passed away early last year.
Chief Clady began his career on November 10, 1969, and retired on December 18, 2000, after 31 years of dedicated service to the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) and County residents.
Chief Clady was a trailblazer, his leadership and steadfast resolve helped guide the LACoFD through challenging issues regarding race, equity, and professionalism. Two of Chief Clady’s many achievements were his history-making promotions. On January 1, 1976, he became the first LACoFD Black firefighter to promote to Fire Fighter Specialist, and on June 1, 1977, the first Black to promote to fire captain.
He led the LACoFD’s first all-Black firefighter crew at Fire Station 58 in Ladera Heights and served as the President of the Los Angeles County Stentorians. Chief Clady’s unwavering commitment led to Fire Station 58 becoming a training center that produced hundreds of firefighters, not only for the LACoFD, but also for surrounding fire agencies.
Over time, Fire Station 58 became affectionately known as “Clady’s Station.” Please join the LACoFD as Fire Station 58 is officially dedicated in remembrance of Chief Hershel Clady.
