A Letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear friends,
I hope you can join me for the 2024 Greater LA Homeless Count taking place from Tuesday, January 23 to Thursday, January 25.
This point-in-time census of our unhoused neighbors is essential to gaining a deeper understanding of the local emergency LA County has declared, including geographic distribution and trends among various populations. Through the Count, we are better able to direct and advocate for housing and vital services to support the needs of those most vulnerable.
The LA Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), which is overseeing the Count, is seeking upwards of 8,000 Angelenos to volunteer. To that end, I encourage you to participate in this important effort and register at theycountwillyou.org. Below are the dates and locations that will be covered in the Count.
Tuesday, January 23, 2024
- SPA 2: San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita Valley
- SPA 3: San Gabriel Valley and Pomona Valley
Wednesday, January 24, 2024
- SPA 5: West Los Angeles
- SPA 7: Southeast Los Angeles
- SPA 8: South Bay Area
Thursday, January 25, 2024
- SPA 1: Antelope Valley (morning)
- SPA 4: Metro Los Angeles
- SPA 6: South Los Angeles
The scale of this emergency requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, and volunteering in the Count is one way for you to be a part of the solution. While the three-day Count takes thousands of volunteers, the year-round fight to end homelessness takes everyone.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
The Whittier Place II Apartments will help us to address our most pressing social issues: Getting our unsheltered residents into housing and ensuring that our Veterans have access to supportive housing to prevent homelessness. I am grateful to East LA Community Corporation for being a great partner in the County’s mission to support our most vulnerable. I look forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand on more affordable housing options across the Eastside.

Southern California is experiencing very cold temperatures, with frost advisories in effect for some areas. During this cold weather, it is critical to be aware that carbon monoxide poisoning can happen when heating your home. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced by burning fuels and can cause shortness of breath, headaches, nausea, seizures, loss of consciousness, respiratory failure, and even death. Follow the tips above to keep you and your loved ones safe during the cold weather.
I’m happy to announce that the annual Can the Trash! Clean Beach Poster Contest is still accepting entries for 2024. The deadline to enter the contest is Wednesday, January 31, 2024. The LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors is looking for artwork from 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in the County that share messages on why it is important to keep the ocean and beaches clean and healthy. The winning artwork will be featured on beach trash barrels from Malibu to San Pedro this summer. Additionally, each winner will receive a $100 Amazon gift card and a custom beach bag featuring the winning artwork.
The LA County Library is partnering with the LA County Department of Public Health and California Department of Health Care Services to provide free doses of naloxone (Narcan) at the El Monte Library. Customers do not have to provide identification, proof of insurance, or payment. While onsite, customers will need to complete a brief video training on how to administer naloxone. Limit one per customer while supplies last.
My office is partnering with the Anti-Recidivism Coalition to host a voter registration and justice resource fair in East LA. There will be over 30 LA County departments, community organizations, and other agencies providing a wide range of free resources and services, including voting registration services and workshops, record expungement, health services, food, clothing, baby supplies, hot meals, and much more.
