Hahn will Open Nogales Park in Park-Starved Southeast LA
New pocket park converts long abandoned lot in Walnut Park
Walnut Park, CA -- This Saturday, December 9, 2023, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn will inaugurate Nogales Park, a new $9.4 million pocket park in the unincorporated Southeast Los Angeles community of Walnut Park, one of the ten most densely-populated communities in Los Angeles County. Supervisor Hahn will be joined by California State Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon and LA County Department leaders.
"No park is too small to make a difference, and for the 16,000 residents who call Walnut Park home, Nogales Park is going to be the green space they've been lacking and that has been denied to them for way too long," said Supervisor Hahn. "Instead of a space for families to enjoy the outdoors, Walnut Park had an ugly abandoned lot for years and years. We're changing that this weekend."
The project broke ground in November of last year, and converts what was previously an empty, overgrown lot into a half-acre LA County Park that will include a splash pad, shade structures, a lawn, playground, exercise equipment, picnic tables, and more. The park also will also feature an underground stormwater capture component for a 27-acre drainage area that will prevent bacteria and metal pollutants from entering the Los Angeles River.
Media interested in attending the ribbon-cutting should RSVP to Esteban Garcia at egarcia@bos.lacounty.gov or at (213) 304-9679.
