A Message From Our Director

Wee Nehiinkem—All my Relatives by Mercedes Dorame.
Dear Colleagues,

This November, as the home of the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission (LANAIC), the LA County Department of Arts and Culture is proud to acknowledge Native American Heritage Month, a time to highlight and lift up the cultural contributions of the American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) community. Each year, the LANAIC selects organizations, families, or individuals to honor—this year's honorees celebrate Roberta Javier for Spirit of Community, Chris "Spanto" Printup for Spirit of Creativity (posthumous), and Jimi Castillo for Spirit of Tradition (posthumous). You can explore more about the month and the honorees in Supervisor Hilda Solis’ Native American Heritage Month motion.

We've also been fortunate to collaborate with the LANAIC and representatives from local Tribes on the development of the Countywide Land Acknowledgment, which was adopted last November—and a new toolkit on its use that we are pleased to share with you in this newsletter. We have learned so much and are grateful to all who contributed to this resource. This work is just a first step, and we look forward to our continued partnership and engagement with local Tribes and the AIAN community.

Below you'll also find an exciting call for artists from Civic Art and an opportunity for consultants. We also highlight on our continuing engagement at the intersection of Arts and Health including the 2023 LA County Arts and Health Summit Recap and a national Music as Medicine workshop in December.

Onward!
Kristin Sakoda

New Land Acknowledgment Toolkit
The Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture recognizes that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples. We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants -- past, present, and emerging -- as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters. We acknowledge that settler colonization resulted in land seizure, disease, subjugation, slavery, relocation, broken promises, genocide, and multigenerational trauma. This acknowledgment demonstrates our responsibility and commitment to truth, healing, and reconciliation and to elevating the stories, culture, and community of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles County. We are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these ancestral lands. We are dedicated to growing and sustaining relationships with Native peoples and local tribal governments, including (in no particular order) the:
  • Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians
  • Gabrielino Tongva Indians of California Tribal Council
  • Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians
  • Gabrieleño Band of Mission Indians - Kizh Nation
  • San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
  • San Fernando Band of Mission Indians
The Land Acknowledgment motion, written by Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn, was unanimously adopted last November by the Board of Supervisors. The Land Acknowledgement was then developed over many months of collaboration with designated representatives from local Tribes. The Board also directed Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the LA City/County Native American Indian Commission, to hire a consultant to develop a toolkit and training resources for County departments, municipalities, and cultural entities to guide implementation of the Land Acknowledgment. The first set of resources are now available on lacounty.gov. Through the buttons below, explore the Implementation Guide, Frequently Asked Questions, and more. More content, including audio clips, videos, and educational resources, will be added in the coming months. We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to the many tribal representatives and individuals across the County who provided valuable input on these resource materials.

IN THE FIELD: ARTS AND HEALTH
In the Field: Arts and Health
This month Director Kristin Sakoda and staff from our Grants and Professional Development team traveled to the Grantmakers in the Arts annual conference, where Director Sakoda participated in a national conversation on Vital Conditions of Health and Wellbeing with members of the national field including Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson. On December 14-15, Director Sakoda will present at the NEA and National Institutes of Health’s Music as Medicine workshop, which you can join virtually, to further explore ways the arts can elevate health and healing. The two-day event will also feature our LA Opera Arts and Health Summit collaborator, Renée Fleming (explore a recap of that event). We invite you to explore a blog about the workshop, along with an announcement of the recently NIH-funded Music and Health Research Networks.
