Dear Neighbors,
Before we get into our weekly recap, I want to share my thoughts on the recent attacks that have taken place in Israel. The violence inflicted on the people of Israel by Hamas is an atrocity. There is no justification for the loss of innocent lives. I stand with all condemning this assault on humanity and pray for all who are mourning and seeking safety.

There are several important issues that are highlighted in October, this week I would like to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I was proud to partner with my colleagues in putting forward motions with unanimous support observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month throughout Los Angeles County - including Domestic Violence Providers Appreciation Day on October 18 - and calling for increased access to services like extended hotel stays and free transportation for those who are actively fleeing intimate partner violence and mandatory training on trauma-informed models for County contracted service providers.
According to a 2020 Los Angeles County Department of Public Health report, among adults 18 and older, 20% of women and 13% of men reported having been physically or sexually abused by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
If you or someone you know needs help, the LA County Domestic Violence Hotline (24/7 Confidential) is (800) 978-3600. The Department of Public Health has compiled a comprehensive list of critical services available for survivors of domestic violence and their families here.
A serious public health issue, domestic violence impacts people of all backgrounds. We must pay close attention to see the signs, invest in the necessary resources for survivors, and lock arms in standing up to and helping end the rhetoric and actions perpetuating this intimate and prevalent form of violence.
Sincerely,
Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors

Tech Empowerment Day at Expo Park!
|
|
It was inspiring seeing a world of possibility expand for over 6,000 students from across the County at the Second Annual Tech Empowerment Day at the LA Coliseum! I joined Supervisor Solis, Senator Bradford, and participating organizations in encouraging students to participate in hands-on interactive experiences and to learn more about career pathways in technology. Tech Empowerment Day is part of Delete the Divide, an initiative led by the County’s Internal Services Department to advance digital equity in underserved communities through partnerships, infrastructure investments, and technology resources that empower residents and small businesses. About 416,000 County households lack internet service and 265,000 households don't have a home computer, so the County is stepping up to do all we can to close our digital divide. To learn more visit DeletetheDivide.org. |

Second District Mayoral Convening |
|
There are 12 cities within LA County’s 2nd District: Carson, Compton, Culver City, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and portions of Los Angeles. The issues impacting our communities cut across city lines which is why I value our quarterly convenings. This one focused on the County’s efforts in addressing street vending operations, transportation projects, the launch of Pathway Home which is currently focused on our unincorporated communities and expanding mental health resources. It’s important that we work together and ensure our shared constituencies are supported and have access to the resources they need. |

Supporting LA Urban Tree Sustainability Initiative |
|
The County was awarded $20 million in federal funding to help plant trees and mitigate extreme heat in our communities. Earlier this month, I joined volunteers and members of the Koreatown Youth & Community Center (KYCC), one of five urban tree-planting organizations in Los Angeles County, at Seoul International Park for the launch of the Los Angeles Urban Tree Sustainability Initiative. Thank you KYCC for your work in launching the Los Angeles Tree Sustainability Initiative and ensuring trees are planted across urban centers throughout Los Angeles County. |

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Culver City Project Homekey |
|
Since the passage of Measure H in 2017, Culver City has been a collaborative partner with the County, receiving about $1.3 million in homelessness services funding. This week, we celebrated a Project Homekey site that will provide 73 units for unhoused individuals, co-locating interim housing and long-term supportive housing side by side. I am proud that Culver City has been a good partner in working with the County on housing solutions for people experiencing homelessness. Our partnership also includes providing $1.7 million over the next three years for the Homekey sites in Culver City. My office will continue to work to provide interim and permanent housing options for our unhoused neighbors throughout our district. |

- Nationally, there are nearly 10,000 craft brewers, and an estimated 1% are Black. Since 1970 Black Brewers Day has been acknowledged throughout the nation. The Board joined me in proclaiming October 10, 2023, as Black Brewers Day in Los Angeles County and initiating an outreach program for microentrepreneurs through the County’s Economic Mobility Initiative.

Care First Community Investment and CFCI Care grants
Advancing our Care First vision is a collaborative effort–and the Justice Care and Opportunities Department Care First Community Investment Care (CFCI) grants are providing resources for justice impacted individuals, youth development, and funding alternatives to incarceration. In October of 2022, 118 community-based organizations (CBOs) in Los Angeles County were awarded over $55 million in combined CFCI grants. The organizations in this video are a prime example of the important work CBOs can accomplish when we invest directly in our communities.
