A Letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
On October 3, 2017, I authored a motion directing LA County to remove all references to Columbus Day as an official holiday and instead replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day. On May 1, 2018, the Board of Supervisors officially adopted an ordinance and made Indigenous Peoples Day an official County holiday every second Monday of October.
California is home to over 150 tribes, and LA County has the largest number of American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) people of any county in the United States. LA County occupies land originally and is still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples -- multiple tribes who have never been federally recognized, and who continue to face land access issues despite their histories and cultural contributions. This inequitable recognition and access to County-owned lands for Native Peoples negatively impacts their physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and cultural health.
Developed over many months of collaboration with leaders from local Tribes, on November 1, 2022, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved my motion to adopt a Land Acknowledgment for LA County. I am proud of this step and committed to continuing to uplift the true histories of what is now known as LA County, as well as prioritize equity for all of our communities.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
I had the privilege of attending the 2nd Annual Tech Empowerment Day this week at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Young students from all over LA County had the chance to learn about careers and opportunities in the tech industry. As technology advances, it is important to open doors for youth of various backgrounds. That is why I have partnered up with LA County’s Internal Services Department, as well as public and corporate partners, to provide information, resources, and programs around internships and apprenticeships to students passionate about working in this growing industry – they are our future.
Libraries are cornerstones of communities. They offer educational enrichment, serve as vote centers, and provide a safe space for all to gather and learn. However, as we face historic learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic, libraries are key to bringing our children and communities back up to speed. This is why I am so grateful that Assemblymember Mike Fong was able to grant my earmark request of $1 million to support renovations at the Norwood Library in the City of El Monte.
The Norwood Library opened at its current address on April 15, 1977, and has never been renovated. With this funding, coupled with the $600K I have allocated, we will ensure that the facility is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, increase access to technology, and address both public and staff accessibility in the entrance, restrooms, fountains, meeting space, and exterior.
I look forward to the day we can open the doors to a newly renovated Norwood Library!
