Dear Neighbor,
The future of the Marina del Rey Freeway has been a topic of discussion over the past few weeks, and I appreciate all who have been engaged on this critical issue. Streets for All, a non-profit organization focused on several initiatives to increase access to public spaces and improve air quality, has presented an idea to potentially alter the freeway to provide more housing and green space. At this stage, the organization has submitted a federal application for funding to conduct a feasibility study and is awaiting approval.
While I did not sign-on as a supporter on the organization’s application to fund the feasibility study, I do support a detailed assessment with full community input that includes the lived experiences of Angelenos who reside near and regularly use the freeway before any decisions to alter the freeway can be made.
The potential implications of the idea being proposed by Streets for All require the organization to complete a comprehensive feasibility study. For example, the data and feedback gathered through the feasibility study could also determine alternatives to removing the freeway, such as adding green spaces around the existing 90 freeway – which is something being considered for the 105 freeway in the Willowbrook area.
My office will be working to ensure that if federal or state funding for the feasibility study is approved, that it takes into account the feedback of residents who live near and use the Marina Freeway before any actions can be made.
It is important to note that, as of now and for the immediate future, there are no approved plans to alter the Marina Freeway, and the feasibility study that would be required has yet to be approved. This is the beginning of an on-going conversation, and my office will be working to ensure the voices of our constituents are heard.
Please continue to share your experience with my office and we will continue to keep you updated. As a reminder, you can contact my office at HollyJMitchell@bos.lacounty.gov, 213-974-2222 or visit Mitchell.LACounty.gov.
Also, I would like to highlight that at our next Board meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, October 3, the Board will vote on a motion I presented that will enable MEHKOs (Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations) in LA County, allowing residential kitchens to be permitted to safely prepare a limited amount of food that can be sold. I encourage you to join the meeting at 9:30 am in person or by calling 1 (877) 226-8163, participant code 1336503, to share your opinion.
Sincerely,
Holly J. Mitchell

Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations known as MEHKOS, allows residential kitchens to be permitted to safely prepare a limited amount of food that can be sold. The LA County Department of Economic Opportunity and the Department of Public Health hosted a town hall at the Lennox Library to discuss MEHKOs (Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations).
