Hello Neighbors,
To all who have been celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend, may you have a sweet and healthy New Year!
As we look back on some of the highlights from this past week, I want to uplift key actions my office took with the support of the Board of Supervisors during this past Tuesday's meeting to help address a few of the issues we often hear from constituents. This includes presenting a motion calling for enhanced outreach and delivery of County services for our unincorporated communities; this will provide an updated website that easily allows residents to navigate the many County departments and initiatives available to them along with a multi-lingual outreach campaign to get printed and digital resources to residents. All our residents benefit from us making navigating our complex County system easier.
Improving transportation safety in our communities so that every person can safely cross the street and travel within their neighborhood remains one of my priorities. I presented two motions focused on this, including creating a Transportation Commission and Tackling Illegal Street Takeovers and Racing to help deter and prevent these reckless and dangerous activities.
As we continue to see workers fighting for fair pay and dignified working conditions, we must think of long-term solutions that create a more equitable workforce. I am proud to have passed a motion calling for a first-of-its-kind Workers Ownership Initiative that will allow local businesses to become employee-owned – this helps with job retention, stabilizes businesses, and provides a path for employees to build wealth.
It has already been an eventful month filled with important celebrations, including the kick-off of Hispanic Heritage Month. I invite you to join my office for our free book fair celebrating Hispanic heritage, history, and culture on Saturday, September 30.
Lastly, I would like to share that I had the honor of presenting a motion with the enthusiastic support of the entire Board of Supervisors, that proclaimed Friday, September 22, 2023, as Rev. James Lawson Jr. Day (this will be his 95th birthday!). It was a privilege recognizing his decades of impact as one of the architects of the Civil Rights Movement. Rev. Lawson continues to teach the principles of non-violence and show us by example how to confront injustice with compassion and resiliency. If he can do this, then we all can do something to give back to our communities.
Sincerely,
Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors

Last month, the Los Angeles County's Homeless Initiative launched its Pathway Home program to help expand our efforts to get residents experiencing homelessness connected to supportive services and permanent housing. The program kicked off in the 2nd District's West Rancho Dominguez community, which has some of the highest RV Encampments in the County. Thanks to the support of multiple County Departments, including Homeless Initiative, Public Works, Sheriff, Public Health, and more, along with many community partners and residents, 58 people were placed into interim housing, including families with children, and 30 dilapidated RV's were removed. Learn more about Pathway Home here. |

East Gardena Community Meeting |
|
Continuing our engagement with community members, this week we hosted a Working Group Session with community leaders from East Gardena alongside County departments to discuss key issues, including RV encampments, illegal dumping, and environmental problems linked to the increase of trucks in the community. My office is working to continue and extend these Working Groups Sessions to all of our unincorporated communities to effectively address constituent needs.
