A Letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
Earlier this week, the Board of Supervisors approved two meaningful motions I authored to support our most vulnerable throughout LA County.
One of the motions focused on protecting our students from extreme heat on school campuses. With climate change coming in full force, lack of greenery in schools, and young people being one of the biggest at-risks groups of experiencing extreme heat illnesses, we must come together to protect our children from experiencing heat-related illnesses. This motion allows a long-term strategy to modernize and cool school campuses, raise awareness and encourage schools to apply to funding opportunities to cool their campuses, provide them with technical assistance on how to apply to these opportunities, and create a toolkit with strategies and practices on how to protect children from heat. We will continue combating climate change and the dangers that come with it while safeguarding our vulnerable communities from them.
My other motion voted on intends to increase engagement with LA County voters whose English is not their first language. This motion instructed the LA County Registrar-Recorder County Clerk to identify locations for voting centers in communities with high concentration of non-English speakers and limited-English proficient voters and ensure that multi-lingual voting materials contain accurate information and are linguistically correct, as well as a post-election report, following the March 2024 Presidential Primary and November 2024 Presidential elections, on how these communities were supported.
There are lots of issues at-hand and I am committed to continuing to uplift Angelenos - both both in the First District and across LA County.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
 Happy Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month!
Over the next month, I will be featuring Latinos on my Instagram to highlight the empowering contributions they have made to our community. We have also launched our annual Metro and Latino Heritage LA limited edition TAP cards that depict artwork and images of our cultura. I encourage everyone to ride Metro and experience the many Hispanic Heritage Month events throughout the County of Los Angeles.
Here are some items that were approved at this past Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting:
- Proclaiming Hispanic Heritage Month in LA County.
- Proclaiming September 17 as Citizenship Day to celebrate the efforts and contributions immigrants who have become naturalized citizens.
- Proclaiming September 19 as National Voter Registration Day to promote voter registration activities, events and programs.
- Creating a multi-lingual awareness campaign for property owners about home property insurance alternatives and ways to mitigate property damage or loss.
- Developing a blueprint identifying immediate and long-term efforts to fortify the infant and toddler care system.
- Addressing the impacts of extreme heat on students on school campuses.
San Gabriel Valley
- Approving $5.3M for a new contract with Southland Transit Inc., for Heights Hopper shuttle service in Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights.
- Authorizing the County to work with Caltrans to prepare a plan to improve the Rosemead Blvd/SR-60 interchange in Whittier Narrows to enhance safety and access for people who walk, roll, ride bicycles, and use transit along the Rosemead corridor.
The LA County Department of Arts and Culture is accepting grant applications for three different programs:
The Organizational Grant Program provides Los Angeles County nonprofit arts organizations funding to address priority needs and ensures cultural services for the diverse communities that comprise LA County. These two-year grants support arts orgs whose services positively impact residents, neighborhoods and communities by providing direct access & increased opportunities for quality arts activities and programming that is often free or low cost.
Community Impact Arts Grant supports arts projects and programming taking place at nonprofit social service and social justice organizations and in municipal departments, enabling these organizations to deliver a wide variety of cultural services to County residents that support arts and culture throughout the region.
The Arts Internship Program provides eligible organizations providing arts programming, grants to hire undergraduate and community college students for 400 hours of paid work experience.

As we monitor COVID-19 cases every week, we are witnessing a rise in cases once again. Regular and booster vaccines, tests, and medications are still free for everyone regardless of their immigration and insurance status. Additionally, LA County libraries are giving out free tests kits.
Vaccines are important for the health of ourselves and those around us, especially infants and toddlers. Young children are more prone to getting sick, so it is best to make sure their vaccinations are up to date. Get free and low-cost vaccinations for your children by visiting our website to get full information on all vaccines needed to keep your children safe and healthy.
I was proud to author a motion this week to proclaim September 17 as Citizenship Day! To mark the occasion, I encourage you to sign-up for our Citizenship Reading Program to learn more about U.S. citizenship and immigration through our recommended booklists and activities. Readers who complete the challenge of reading 400 minutes will have a chance to win a prize!
Need community hours? Come down to the City Terrace Artwalk and help make this event successful! Give back to your community by volunteering as a gallery usher, cleanup crew, safety worker, in the kids' corner, or other opportunities. For more information, email srr_ruiz97@yahoo.com with the number of hours you will be volunteering and what school you are attending.
