A LETTER FROM LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERVISOR HILDA L. SOLIS
Dear Friends,
This month is National Senior Center Month, and our LA County Aging & Disabilities Department will be celebrating via its theme Discover Yours and encourages residents to discover new friends, hobbies, and experiences at their local community and senior centers.
It is very important for older adults to stay connected and establish friendships because it helps to combat loneliness. In LA County, we have over 14 community and senior centers, and the First District is home to the following: Centro Maravilla Service Center, East LA Service Center, Potrero Heights Park Community & Senior Center, and the San Gabriel Valley Service Center. These locations all bring a welcoming and inclusive environment where older adults can socialize and make new friends, learn new skills, and access services and resources. From fitness and wellness activities to arts and crafts, there is always something fun to do. Our community and senior centers also provide programs that maintain and strengthen independence, such as meal programs and employment workshops. And to include everyone’s unique interests and needs, older adults are offered unique events and activities that cater to many diverse interests.
I got a chance to visit the San Gabriel Valley’s Service Center this week and witness many older adults make new friends, learn fun recipes, and create lasting memories at a cooking class. To that end, I highly encourage you to visit your local community and senior center this month – to volunteer or to be a part of our incredible older adult community receiving well-being programs and services.
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
It was a pleasure to host First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom at the LA General Medical Center campus to tour our Restorative Care Village which helps to create a comprehensive continuum of care to address the physical, mental, and substance use needs many of our residents struggle with. I am grateful to the State of California for supporting our work to break the cycle between hospitals, streets, and jails. The possibilities of supporting and improving the health of many in the LA County are endless.
It was great to join Arts for LA this morning for the Creative Jobs Collective Impact Initiative World Café Convening and discuss how Los Angeles County is working to uplift the creation of 10,000 living wage jobs for artists and cultural workers from historically underrepresented communities.
Many thanks to our LA County Department of Arts and Culture and Department of Economic Opportunity for providing support and guidance per my motion earlier this year. As a leader in the arts, I vow to continue to support our creative workforce because putting them at the center of our recovery is fundamental to our countywide long-term resiliency.
It is an understatement to say that immigrants are the backbone of the LA County. Without them, we would not be a beautiful and diverse community. However, many of our immigrant residents continue to reach their American Dream.
Special thanks to Immigrants Are Los Angeles for hosting a town hall to discuss issues around housing, legal services, and broadband access programs. As the daughter of immigrant parents, I pledge to continue to uplift the lives of those who have made and continue to make LA County special, and provide the resources immigrants need to flourish.

LA County recognizes the mental health challenges faced by many of our adolescents. Mental health can affect various aspects of a teen’s life, including academic performance, overall health and wellness, and can be associated with other risky behaviors like drug use, violence, and high-risk sexual behaviors. To that end, our LA County Department of Public Health has developed a mental health toolkit for parents and guardians with the purpose to equip them with the knowledge and resources to support their teen's mental health and wellbeing.
Our LA County Department of Parks and Recreation is now offering its free Snack Program. From September 5, 2023, through May 24, 2024, 46 LA County Parks will be providing children, ages 18 and younger, with nutritious lunches and snacks Monday through Friday from 3 pm to 4 pm.
