A LETTER FROM LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERVISOR HILDA L. SOLIS
Dear Friends,
With Labor Day approaching, I am reflecting on the power of coming together to fight for strength, prosperity, and well-being. This lesson has been instilled in me from a young age. My parents did not have the safest or most accommodating working conditions. Both joined unions to fight for dignity in their workplace. My father was a Teamster and my mother was in the United Rubber Workers, where they organized for better working conditions for themselves and their union brothers and sisters. To this day, their courage inspires me to advocate for workers’ rights. It is what led me to become the U.S. Secretary of Labor under former President Barack Obama.
Organized labor provides a collective voice for workers. By coming together, unions create a powerful bond to protect workers and empower their members to fight for what is right, even if it causes “good trouble.”
I applaud every union member for their determination and commitment to workers' rights. Whether you’re a hotel worker, nurse, writer, actor or future union member, I thank you for standing in solidarity and encouraging future workers to unionize. If you are currently on a union strike, please know that I stand with you. Si se puede!
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
