Join us tomorrow at 6pm!
Come listen to stories from people who have experienced being on an ankle monitor and how it affected their lives and their communities.
Featured Speakers:
Sheila Natt: Growing up in Compton, Sheila Natt defied the statistical assumptions of who a Black girl from Compton was supposed to be. Having been placed on an electronic monitor as a teenager, Sheila overcame this challenging experience and was still able to move forward with her life, not allowing that moment to define her character. Today, she works as a commercial liability adjuster, owns a successful business, and sets aside time to volunteer in her community. Sheila is also a mother to a wonderful college student and the adoptive aunt to her niece.
Anthony Robles: Anthony Robles is a Statewide Organizer with Dignity & Power Now in Los Angeles. He has direct experience with electronic monitoring surveillance and is currently working with Care First California to end pretrial incarceration and surveillance. Previously, Anthony played an instrumental role in developing Los Angeles County’s Department of Youth Development.Â
Emmett Sanders: Emmett Sanders is a critically impacted researcher, advocate, author and co-author of several publications including Cages Without Bars: Pretrial Electronic Monitoring Across the United States. His previous work as Project Researcher on MediaJustice’s Challenging E-carceration and Unshackling Freedom campaigns focused on the ever-expanding use of electronic monitoring in immigration and criminal legal systems and the disproportionate and devastating impacts of EM on those caught in these systems. He recently took on a new role with Prison Policy Initiative as their Policy and Advocacy Associate.
