A Letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
This week I was sworn into office to continue representing and advocating for the residents of the First District. I am deeply grateful for the confidence and faith that you have placed in me. Winning the Primary Election back in June 2022 by more than two-thirds is a tribute to our community. Because even after the boundaries of the First District changed, marking a 40% new constituency, our work over the last eight years transcended boundaries. It is those values of unity and coalition building – tenets of my campaign – that have defined my entire career.
My priorities as a Supervisor remain the same – creating more permanent supportive housing for our unhoused neighbors, providing additional affordable units for our low-income families, bringing equitable transportation to all residents, creating jobs by investing in our infrastructure, bridging the digital divide in our communities, fighting food insecurity, and advocating for true equity.
The size of the County is proportionate to the scale of our challenges, but the opportunities outsize those challenges. These are opportunities that I intend to realize in partnership with my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors, our cities, and most of all our residents. These next four years, I will be driven by equity for our communities to ensure the dignity they deserve, doing so in partnership with you.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
I was so proud to join the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), community partners, and local businesses to celebrate the relaunch of the East LA Entrepreneur Center at Centro Maravilla Community Center – LA County's one-stop small business development hub. The Center, operated by DEO's Office of Small Business, helps small business owners looking to start or grow a business, access one-on-one business counseling services, connect to technical assistance, attend business development webinars and workshops, and more!
I was thrilled to also include an award ceremony for 53 small businesses that received $5K and $10K grants through the Pacific Asian Consortium in Employment (PACE) Small Business Grant Program – an initiative I launched to help struggling small businesses in unincorporated areas of LA County. Many of those who received a grant had never obtained any form of public aid. This was their first assistance from government!
As we know, the success of one business is especially important for our commercial corridors because we need strong businesses to provide services for residents. If you're a business owner looking for help, please visit the East LA Entrepreneur Center located at 4716 E Cesar E Chavez Ave, Building B, Los Angeles, CA 90022 – it is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
It was an honor to join First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom to celebrate and discuss the State of California’s landmark investment in School Meals for All. This is especially important for our Latino communities as they experience the highest prevalence of food insecurity in LA County.
Food is so much more than sustenance – it is about healing, culture, and community. These are exactly what the School Meals for All offers our families through healthy, sustainable meals that employ dedicated staff from the community while ensuring we are stewards of our environment.
As part of the Illuminate LA initiative, the Department of Arts and Culture’s Civic Art Division is launching the Collective Memory Installation in Grand Park. The Collective Memory Installation is a temporary art projection project that will exhibit artworks that create public discourse and engagement. This project offers the opportunity for artists to challenge the notion of monuments as controlled narratives and erasure of marginalized communities, as well as support artists in sharing their narratives and experiences in the community to express the collective history of this site. One hundred selected artists’ works will be publicly displayed at Grand Park in early 2023. All selected artists will receive $1,000.
The deadline for artists' submissions is January 5, 2023, at 5 pm.
The Bassett Avocado Heights Advanced Energy Community BAAEC will install rooftop solar on eligible homes so your home will get its electricity from the sun! This means lower electricity bills for your home. The stored electricity can be used when there is no sunlight or as backup power during blackouts. Residents can also receive free water heater tune-ups and if eligible, a free water heater! The tune-up service will help avoid a future emergency by extending the life of the water heater.
