LA County Now Offering Novavax Vaccine
Getting vaccinated and boosted remains a critical tool against severe symptoms, hospitalization, & long-term illness from COVID-19, especially when community transmission is high. One opportunity to increase vaccination rates is the Novavax vaccine that was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is now available in LA County. The Novavax vaccine is authorized for use as a two-dose primary series for adults 18 and older with the two doses given three to eight weeks apart. This vaccine was made using technology that has been used in vaccines for more than 30 years.
LA County Public Health vaccination sites, mobile vaccination teams, and several of our partners providing mobile vaccine clinics are now offering the Novavax vaccine, and additional providers will be added in coming weeks. Residents 18+ may walk in or they may contact their provider for availability. To find a vaccination site, please visit here.

Indoor masking is strongly advised in any indoor public setting and still required in all healthcare settings, on public transportation, such as buses and trains, and in transit hubs, as well as at long term care settings, shelters, cooling centers, and correctional facilities. Masks are also required for 10 days for anyone recently diagnosed with, or exposed to, COVID-19, when they are around other people.
In order to work well, a mask needs to have both a good fit and good filtration. A good fit means that the mask covers your mouth and nose and fits snugly against the sides of your face and your nose. Good filtration means the material that the mask is made of blocks the virus well. You can get good filtration by wearing a mask that has several layers made of certain materials.
While all masks provide some level of protection, well-fitting respirators (e.g., N95 and KN95) provide the best protection. Wearing a highly protective mask is important for high risk situations and for people at increased risk for severe disease.

Children need extra attention when it’s hot, especially if they’re active and playing outside. Here are some important tips to keep young ones healthy. #HeatSafeLA!
- Stay hydrated! Children are prone to dehydration, especially when they are playing outside. Make sure they drink water regularly before, during, and after playing in the heat.
- Stay cool on extremely hot days, have children play indoors, and only play outside in the mornings or evenings to rest. During the hottest days, make plans to cool your home or stay in the nearest place with A/C.
- Never leave children in the car unattended, not even for a minute. Cars heat up dangerously fast, even with a window cracked open. Make sure no one is left behind when you leave the car.
- TIP! Keep a stuffed animal in the front with the driver when a child is in the car as a reminder to not leave them behind.

Monkeypox Update
Public Health continues to work to monitor and control the spread of human monkeypox virus. As of August 5, 2022, there are 616 cases reported in LA County.
In alignment with the nationwide strategies, the following Los Angeles County residents are currently eligible to receive the JYNNEOS vaccine:
1. Persons confirmed by Public Health to have had high-or intermediate-risk contact with someone with monkeypox, as defined by CDC.
2. Gay or bisexual men and transgender persons who18 years of age and older who
- Had multiple or anonymous sex partners in the last 14 days including engaging in survival and/or transactional sex (e.g., sex in exchange for shelter, food and other goods and needs)
- Had a diagnosis of gonorrhea and/or early syphilis within the past 12 months, OR
- Are on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), OR
- Attended or worked at a commercial sex venue or other venue where they had anonymous sex or sex with multiple partners (e.g., saunas, bathhouses, sex clubs, sex party) within the past 21 days.
Note: If you are immunocompromised (including if you have advanced or uncontrolled HIV), you may be at high risk for severe disease and will be prioritized for vaccination.
Public Health will directly communicate to eligible patients in groups #1-3 to provide details on how and where to access the JYNNEOS vaccine. Providers who do not have JYNNEOS vaccine can refer gay or bisexual men and transgender persons meeting eligibility criteria #4 to a monkeypox vaccination site if they provide the patient with an appropriate and verifiable test result in the last 12 months OR a signed medical attestation form.
Public Health is offering Speakers’ Bureau presentations on monkeypox. Request a presentation here.
