A Letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
High temperatures are expected for Southern California the next couple of days, with some areas of LA County reaching the triple digits. It is critical to be aware of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, heat cramps, and exhaustion, as these are very common during hot days. Extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among weather-related hazards. Outside workers, older adults, residents experiencing homelessness, people with chronical medical conditions, infants and children, as well as people who are overweight, are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses.
Here are some tips to stay safe during this extreme weather:
- Stay out of the sun and try limiting outdoor, high-energy activities to morning and evening hours when it is cooler.
- Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing as well as wide-brimmed hats.
- Take cold showers.
- Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Limit very sugary and alcoholic drinks as these cause dehydration.
- Use sunscreen and re-apply every two hours.
- Never leave children or pets inside a car or unattended.
- Check on neighbors who might be vulnerable to the heat, especially those without air conditioning.
-
Sign up for Alert LA County to receive emergency alerts by text, email and/or phone call.
Knowing the signs of heat-related illnesses can make the difference in a life-and-death situation. If you or someone you know is having symptoms of a heat-related illness, call 9-1-1 or get the person to a hospital immediately. Cool down with whatever methods are available until medical help arrives. Do not give the person anything to drink.
If you do not have air conditioning in your home, please visit the nearest public cooling center. Find all cooling centers by calling 2-1-1 or by clicking here.
LA County swimming pools and splash pads are also a good way to find relief of the heat. Visit parks.lacounty.gov to find all swimming pools and splash pads. To find swimming pools within the City of Los Angeles, visit laparks.org.
Sincerely,
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District

On June 28, 2022, the LA County Board of Supervisors passed my motion to develop a comprehensive Skid Row Action Plan. This week, we launched the first meeting to develop a shared vision action plan for comprehensively addressing the health and housing needs of Skid Row’s residents experiencing homelessness.
I am so thankful to lead this work alongside the County’s Homeless Initiative and Department of Health Services' Housing for Health Division, as well as Skid Row residents, service providers, and mutual aid organizations. I look forward to working with them to make sure Skid Row gets the resources it deserves.
