Now Available: Pediatric Vaccines for All Children Ages 6 Months and Older
The FDA has provided Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for children ages six months and above.
The Pfizer vaccine is for children ages 6 months to 4 years and requires 3 doses. The first two doses should be given 3 to 8 weeks apart, and the third dose at least 8 weeks later.
The Moderna vaccine is for children ages 6 months to 5 years and requires 2 doses. The second dose should be given 4 to 8 weeks after the first dose.
LA County residents can access these vaccinations at over 900 locations. This includes almost 180 healthcare provider facilities such as pediatricians’ offices, over 200 pharmacies, over 500 mobile sites, and seven point of dispensing (POD) sites.
Parents and guardians who plan to vaccinate their children at Public Health sites should be aware of the following:
- The COVID-19 vaccine is free.
- If insured, individuals should bring their health insurance card (COVID-19 vaccines remain free regardless of insurance status).
- Individuals will not be asked about their immigration status when getting vaccinated.
- No appointment is needed at many locations.
Parents and guardians should also note that most pharmacies are only authorized to vaccinate persons aged 3 and older, but there may be a few locations where this varies.
The following Public Health locations are open for walk-ins:

As of Monday, June 27, LA County remains at the medium community level on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) COVID-19 Community Level framework, although there is a high amount of community transmission in LA County. The CDC Community Level framework has three parts: (1) the weekly cumulative case rate per 100,000 people, (2) the seven-day cumulative rate of COVID-19 hospital admissions, and (3) the percentage of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients.
This medium level is based on a very high case rate of 325 cases per 100,000 residents, well above the CDC’s 200 cases per 100,000 threshold for the low community level.
The county’s hospital admission rate is at 8.3 per 100,000 people. The percentage of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients is at 4.2%. If the county reaches 10 for either of these two metrics, it will move into the “high” community level.
If the county moves into the high level and remains there for two consecutive weeks, Public Health will implement a universal indoor masking requirement for everyone age 2 and older in LA County as recommended by the CDC. If it were to be implemented, it would remain in effect until the county returns to the medium level for two consecutive weeks.
As a reminder, Public Health continues to strongly recommend wearing masks with good fit and good filtration in all public indoor settings.

As family and friends gather this 4th of July weekend, we have a collective responsibility to keep each other safe. With community transmission high, we recommend taking the appropriate precautions to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to protect yourselves and others from serious illness. We are lucky to have many tools available, including vaccinations, masking, testing, and therapeutics, and we hope you take advantage of these.
If you plan to host or attend an in-person gathering, please consider the following additional strategies for preventing the spread of COVID-19:
- With summer in full swing, we encourage gathering outdoors if possible. Please ensure you stay hydrated and wear protection, such as sunscreen or a hat, if you plan on being in the sun.
- If gathering indoors, keep gatherings small, ensure proper ventilation, and wear a mask when not actively eating or drinking. Please consider testing before gathering indoors with others, particularly if there are individuals attending the gathering at higher risk.
-
Wash your hands often and keep some distance from others, when possible, especially when you’re eating.
- If you experience any symptoms – before or after gathering – please stay home, away from others, and get tested. If you do test positive, notify any close contacts that they have been exposed and remain isolated at home until symptoms have resolved and you have a negative test result 5 days or more after testing positive.

As COVID-19 transmission remains high in LA County, Public Health wants to remind residents of the best practices for taking at-home COVID-19 tests. Also known as antigen tests, these tests detect the presence of COVID-19 proteins to determine if someone is infected.
Early on in an infection, an individual may test negative if there aren’t enough COVID-19 proteins for the test to detect. If individuals are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and their first at-home test is negative, they should continue isolating and take a second test one to two days later. Most at-home COVID-19 test kits come with two tests for this exact purpose.
If you are able to get a PCR test, these tests are more sensitive and often able to detect an infection earlier than antigen tests.

Public Health has confirmed local transmission of monkeypox in LA County. This means some of the more recent 30 cases of monkeypox in LA County likely acquired locally, as they have no history of travel.
Anyone can get or spread monkeypox, but some of the recent cases identified have been among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who attended large events where the exposure to monkeypox may have occurred.
Monkeypox does not spread easily between people. The spread of monkeypox from person to person can occur through contact with bodily fluids, monkeypox sores, items that have been contaminated with fluids or sores, or through prolonged exposure to respiratory droplets. Because of this, transmission may also occur during sex through skin-to-skin and other intimate contact.
Contact your healthcare provider for a risk assessment if you have symptoms consistent with monkeypox (rashes or lesions) or have had a close contact with someone who has a similar rash or received a diagnosis of suspected or confirmed monkeypox. LA County has a limited supply of the JYNNEOS vaccine, an FDA-approved vaccination for monkeypox.
Public Health is offering Speakers’ Bureau presentations on monkeypox. Request a presentation here.
