A Letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis
Dear Friends,
I recently announced $220,500 in grant funding to community organizations as part of the First District Community Grants Program (Program). The purpose of the Program is to develop or support services that meet the diverse needs of the residents of the First District, on issues ranging from health, public safety and homelessness to environmental justice and jobs among others.
The Program is a critical component of my partnership with nonprofit organizations to help improve and enhance the wellbeing of First District residents, especially those most vulnerable or economically disadvantaged. These grants are intended to: incubate innovative programs; provide gap funding; encourage collaboration; invest in visionary leadership; support critical community needs; and expand proven pilot innovations.
The organizations that received grant funding from the Program during this cycle include: dA Center for the Arts; Boys & Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley & Eastside; Meztli Projects; Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County; Cancer Support Community Los Angeles; Conga Kids; Shelter Partnership; Mt. San Antonio College Foundation; People Assisting the Homeless (PATH); Hollenbeck Police Activities League; La Plaza de Cultura y Artes; Foothill Unity Center, Inc.; Emotional Health Association; dba SHARE!; Para Los Niños; and Fostering Dreams Project.
It is my hope that funding from this program will let families know that they are not alone or forgotten. Please know that I will continue to use every resource at my disposal to help our community weather the storm of COVID-19.
Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
Proud to have joined the celebration of Hacienda La Puente Unified School District’s Solar Project which will help reduce the school district’s reliability on fossil fuel generated electricity and shift to a more renewable power source. The installation of solar and energy storage systems is a critical pathway to achieving our Green House Gas reduction targets.
Projects like this one are essential to ensure that we continue to move forward toward cleaner and more sustainable energy for our children to have a better future.
I was delighted to join Assemblymember Miguel Santiago for his announcement to expand the California College Promise program to all full-time community college students through AB 2266 earlier this week!
The pandemic has prevented our students from enrolling for the first time, going back to the classroom, and even graduating. We owe it to our students to eliminate any barriers, including tuition.
A modified LA County Health Officer Order went into effect on February 16, 2022, recommending, but no longer requiring, masking at outdoor mega events and outdoor spaces at K-12 schools and childcare centers.
Per state regulations, indoor masking at K-12 schools, childcare facilities, youth settings, healthcare settings, correctional facilities, homeless and emergency shelters, and cooling centers is still currently required. The state will also provide an updated assessment on February 28 on appropriate safety considerations for schools.
Additionally, per federal regulations, masking when riding public transit and in transportation hubs is still required.
The Board of Supervisors has passed a Commercial Tenant Protections Ordinance to protect commercial tenants from harassment and retaliation. The Ordinance makes this protection permanent for commercial tenants with nine employees or less in unincorporated areas of LA County once the COVID-19 Tenant Protections Resolution expires December 31, 2022.
The County has received reports of a telephone scam targeting consumers. The caller is altering the caller ID to make it look like a call is coming from the LA County Chief Executive Office’s Countywide Communications information line at 213-974-1311, claiming to be from Medi-Cal, and asking people to share personal or medical information.
We urge all consumers to use caution before responding to spoofed spam calls or any phone number you do not recognize.
LA County WILL NOT use robocalls, automated response systems, or call you unexpectedly about Medi-Cal.
