Community Advisory Board Formation:
African American, AAPI and LGBTQ+

To improve and increase the office’s interaction with the community, District Attorney George Gascón announced the formation of three new advisory boards.

The additional advisory boards will focus on issues related to the African American, Asian American and Pacific Islander and LGBTQ+ communities. The boards include community leaders, crime victim advocates and social services specialists.

The boards provide input on District Attorney’s Office policies and offer advice on best practices in serving their communities.

“The District Attorney’s Office is a learning organization, and we encourage the public to share their thoughts on all aspects of what we do,” District Attorney Gascón said. “We are creating advisory boards to ensure that there are paths of communication with the office. I look forward to their suggestions and feedback.”

The boards join the office’s Crime Victims Advisory Board, which was formed in December 2020.

If you or anyone you know is interested in serving on or supporting District Attorney’s Office Community Advisory Boards, please email: info@da.lacounty.gov.

37th Holiday Giving Drive

DA-NL202201-Holiday-Giving-Drive

Assistant Program Administrator Cynthia Leon assembles cards that were sent to crime victims and their families as part of LADA’s annual Holiday Giving Drive.

Nearly 300 children received gift cards from LADA this holiday season.

They and their families were presented with gift cards from retail and grocery stores as part of the office’s 37th annual Holiday Giving Drive.

Each year, employees have contributed thousands of dollars toward the purchase of holiday gifts for victims of crime and their families.

One couple who received gift cards last month are caring for the children of their son, who was shot and killed. The couple already was caring for their late daughter’s children at the time of his death. Their only request:  winter coats for all four children.

For the second year, gifts were distributed by mail instead of in-person delivery. The change was made to reduce risks caused by COVID-19.

Contributions to the Holiday Giving Drive are accepted year-round. To contribute, visit http://www.calfund.org/District-Attorneys-Victim-Assistance-Fund/.

A dozen employees from the District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation rang in the new year at the Union Rescue Mission’s kitchen in Los Angeles by preparing meals of ground-beef tacos, rice and beans that were shared with people experiencing homelessness.

“We wanted to give back to the community in a meaningful way,” said Sgt. Jenelle Meier of BOI’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Unit who organized the effort.

DA-NL202201-Myth-Busters

True or False: The District Attorney’s Office investigates every officer-involved shooting in Los Angeles County.

False. Effective July 1, 2021, the California Attorney General was given sole jurisdiction over all peace officer-involved shootings that result in the death of an unarmed civilian (Assembly Bill 1506). As a result, the state Department of Justice is investigating the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana Peralta last month in North Hollywood to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
