The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors established the Family Assistance Program in July 2019 to support families following a fatal use of force or death while in the custody of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. The program aims to improve communication between County Departments and families of the decedents through compassionate communication and trauma-informed responses, services, and support to families, friends, and witnesses following an in-custody death or fatal use of force.

The Family Assistance Program (FAP) has provided services to families since August of 2019 under the Department of Mental Health. The program is currently in transition to the Department of Public Health's Office of Violence Prevention. Your feedback is voluntary, and it will assist in the improvement of the program. Share your answers to these questions:
- What kinds of resources are needed to help the community heal after a fatal use of force incident?
- Do you think that it is important that FAP provide access to services from someone trained in helping cope with trauma?
- What is most urgently needed to build trust between your community and the County of Los Angeles?
- Would it be preferable that FAP services be offered to affected families by community-based organizations rather than County employees?
- What is the best method for the County to communicate about services to support the community?
- What are the barriers that prevent community members from accessing services during or after a crisis?
- What types of resources are needed to help families following an in-custody-related death?
- Have you received services from the Family Assistance Program? If so, what services were most helpful to you and your family? What are some improvements you’d like to see implemented in the program?
